“Yeah,” I say, taking the tiny piece of electronics from inside my jacket pocket.

“Awesome!” Julian cheers. “I can’t believe we’re going to be able to do this.”

“Julian, you need to calm down,” I say, grinning.

He chuckles like a maniac before clearing his throat. “Right, let’s see,” he says in a more subdued voice. “Can you get closer to the CPU, Rory?”

“Sure.”

“Insert the drive in the top right port,” he says.

“This one?” I say, knowing he’s able to see everything because of the camera hidden in my shirt’s button.

“Yep, that one. Go right ahead.”

A list of questions pops up on the screen the moment I’ve inserted the pen drive. They’re all asking for confirmation whether I want to run the program that’s loaded on the drive.

Julian guides me along, making me click ‘yes’ on all of them.

“Let go of the mouse now,” Julian instructs.

Obeying him, I step back.

To my surprise, the cursor moves on its own along the screen and opens up a program. Typed commands start appearing in the comment box before my very eyes.

“What’s happening?” I whisper.

“I’ve hacked into the PC,” Julian says in a quiet voice. “I’m able to control everything on it remotely. Thanks to you, it won’t be long before I have combed through everything inside these servers.”

“So, I’ve done the job?”

“Yes, Rory. You’ve done it, my rockstar.”

Warmth and utter satisfaction spread through me at those words. My lips curve in a bright grin as I realize I’ve finally managed to help my mates.

My excitement, though, is short-lived.

“Rory! You’ve got to get out of there!” Simon’s desperate voice shouts in my ear.

“Huh? What?”

“It’s Jake,” Simon says in an urgent tone. “His car just stopped in front of the house. Get out of the basement before he figures out what you’re up to.”

“What about the pen drive? Do I leave it in there?”

“No,” Julian’s voice answers me. “Take it out and do what you can to distract Jake. He can’t know what’s happening. We’ll need at least five hours to download the data from those servers. Until then, do what you can to keep him away from the basement.”

“Don’t tell her to stay there!” Simon’s voice hisses. “That man is dangerous! He’ll hurt her.”

“If she doesn’t distract him, this would all be a waste!” Julian retaliates. “We’ll never get a chance like this again.”

While they argue, I move forward and pull out the pen drive. Sliding it inside my pocket, I run across the room and dash up the stairs.

Jake must not find me anywhere near the basement. He must think I’m here to talk to him.

Reaching the top floor, I shut the door and run down the hallway to reach the living room.

I’ve barely made it when I hear the front door opening.
