Erin is still slumped against a pillow. She looks like she barely has the strength to keep her eyes open.

“When was the last time you ate something?” I ask, placing the snacks on the bed.

She shrugs. “Not since they brought me to this house.” A spark of life lights up her blue eyes as she stares at the shiny packets. Without a thought, she snatches a pack of cookies and tears into it.

Pity wells up inside me as I remember the starved state I was in when Seth first rescued me from the Black Widow. I’d eaten everything I could lay my hands on and then, vomited it all out.

I let Erin eat all the cookies but I stop her when she reaches for the chips. “Just have some water,” I say, handing her the bottle of water.

She takes it from me and drinks thirstily until she’s emptied the bottle.

“Can I have some more food?” she asks with a hopeful look on her face.

“Fine,” I mumble, unable to find the resolve to stop her. “Just one pack, though.”

She gives me a bright smile and tears open a packet of potato chips.

While she munches on the snacks, I head toward one of the wardrobes in the corner. Looking through the clothes hanging in there, I choose a sweatshirt, a pair of boxers, and a pair of socks.

“Wear these,” I instruct when Erin is nearly finished with her snacks.

“Thanks,” she mutters, pulling on the sweatshirt. “I was cold.”

“Can I ask you something?” I ask her.

“Sure,” she says with a nod.

“You must’ve heard the commotion that was happening outside,” I say. “You must have heard the gunshots and Jake’s screams. Why were you quiet throughout the whole thing?”

She’s quiet as she pulls on the socks. “I was too exhausted to care,” she says after a long pause. “I didn’t think you’d help me either. The other women never did.”

“What are you talking about? Who else was here?”

Before she can explain, Seth’s voice interrupts through the earpiece.

“Rory, are you okay?” he asks in a worried tone.

“Yeah, I’m about to leave the house.”

“Why is it taking so long?” Seth asks anxiously. “Is she giving you any trouble?”

“Who are you talking to?” Erin asks with a curious look on her face.

Holding up my hand, I focus my attention on Seth. “No, nothing like that. She needed a little rest after being tied down for hours. We’ll meet you in a few minutes.”

“Stay alert, Rory,” Seth reminds me in a grim tone. “Don’t let your guard down.”

“I’ll be careful,” I promise him.

Looking toward, Erin I gesture for her to get off the bed. “Come on. We’re getting out of here.”

Her face screws up in pain as she climbs out of the bed. She’s barely able to stand on her feet but manages to hobble toward the door.

“Are you a cop or something?” she asks as I wrap an arm around her shoulders to support her.

“Not really. I’m just helping some people to eliminate people like Jake.”

“So, you’re the good guys?”
