“I told you,” I say with a gentle smile. “I’ve been in your place. I know how vulnerable you feel right now.”

“Where are you taking me?” she asks in a sullen voice.

“I’m taking you to one of Burton Pack’s estates,” I say. “I’m sure you’ve heard about them?”

“The military pack?” she asks, her eyes widening.

I smile and nod. “This is Captain Seth Burton,” I say, gesturing toward Seth. “He’ll make sure you’re safe.”

Her gaze shifts toward Seth’s back before falling back on me again.

“Can you tell me more about yourself?” I ask gently. “We want to know how you ended up in that house.”

Her lips tremble as she looks away.

“It’s okay,” I assure her. “We’ll do everything to help you, Erin.”

Tears roll down her cheeks as she stuffs a fist into her mouth to stop the sobs from escaping her. I stay patient, giving her time to calm down.

“My foster mom’s very strict,” she says in a broken voice after a while. “She’s on my ass all the time, talking to the teachers and monitoring what grades I get for my assignments and tests. I hated the way she was trying to control me, so I ran away one night.”

“Where’d you go?”

“I went to hang out at a nightclub with some people from my school,” she says. “Everything was going great. I got to drink vodka for the first time in my life that night. And then...I don’t remember what happened next. When I opened my eyes again, I was in the back of a truck. Whoever took me blindfolded me and tied my wrists and ankles.”

Her eyebrows crease as she thinks hard.

“I have no idea who they were or why they targeted me,” she says. “The strangest thing was that the people who took me were women. They were strong betas with spider tattoos on their necks.”

“The Black Widow,” I murmur the cursed name. “Did you see any other omegas?”

Erin nods. “There were five others,” she says.

“Shit!” I curse, looking toward Seth. “They’ve started kidnapping omegas again.”

His green eyes are lit with rage but he doesn’t utter a single curse. His fingers grip the wheel hard as he stares at the road ahead.

I know he’s bottling up his anger to avoid scaring Erin. He’s already witnessed the way I’d been when he first rescued me. He’s making sure to make Erin feel safe in his presence.

“How did you end up with Jake?” I ask her.

“He came into the warehouse where I was being kept,” she says. “He looked at all of us before picking me. They handcuffed me and threatened to kill me if I didn’t follow his orders.” She lets out a sudden wail and breaks down completely.

“Seth, stop the car,” I say urgently. “I’ll go and sit with her.”

“All right,” he says, bringing the car to a stop.

Climbing out, I open the back passenger door and take the seat beside Erin’s. Wrapping my arms around her, I hug her tightly as she continues to sob.

“It’s all right,” I say in my most reassuring voice. “Jake will never hurt you again. You’re safe now.”

“Are you sure?” she asks in a choked voice. “He said I should never make the mistake of running away.”

“Jake’s the one who’ll never be able to run again,” I say in an assertive voice. “You heard the gunshots earlier, right?”

She nods.

“Jake was hit by every single one of those bullets. So, don’t worry about him coming after you again. He’ll be lucky if he can keep his life after the crimes he’s committed.”
