“If I ever see Laurel again, I’ll tell her how much I miss her,” Erin says, sobbing hard.

“Is Laurel your foster parent?”

“Yeah. She’s always looked out for me. Even though she’s strict about school and grades, she’s never starved me or hit me. She’s the best parent I’ve ever had. I miss her.”

“Don’t worry. You’ll see her again.”

Erin’s arms tighten around me as she continues to sob.

Relief spreads me through as Seth drives through the gates of Burton Estate. The familiar sight of soldiers in maroon uniforms instantly calms me.

I expect Seth to take us home but he navigates the car toward one of the admin buildings in the far distance.

“Where are you taking us?” I ask him.

“I asked Sergeant Jennings to meet us,” he says in a grim tone. “The kid needs a doctor to check up on her injuries. She might even need a psychiatric diagnosis after the trauma she went through.”

The car comes to a stop.

A tall woman in a neat military uniform comes forward when Seth climbs out. She strikes a salute and speaks with Seth.

“Come on. Let’s go,” I say.

Erin grabs my arm the moment she climbs out of the car.

I can understand how scared and vulnerable she feels right now. A part of me wants to take her home but I know she needs a trained medical expert to help her.

Seth gestures toward me.

Gently pulling on Erin’s hand, I make her walk with me.

“This is Sergeant Jennings,” Seth introduces the female beta officer. “She’s one of our best resident doctors.”

“Hello,” I say with a polite nod. “You must take good care of Erin for me.”

“Of course, I will,” Sergeant Jennings agrees immediately. A soft look comes into her eyes as she moves closer to Erin. “How about you come with me and I’ll make you some hot cocoa? After that, we’ll look at your injuries and patch you up.”

“Will you come with me?” Erin asks, staring at me with a helpless gaze.

“You need a doctor right now,” Seth says in a deep commanding voice. “Rory will visit you once your injuries are treated. Until then, be obedient to the medics who’re going to help you.”

I want to tell him that I’m okay with keeping Erin company but something about his expression tells me his calm façade is about to shatter. A deep intuition tells me that my alpha needs me right now.

“I promise I’ll see you soon,” I say, removing my arm from Erin’s hold. “Until then, make sure to take care of yourself.” Glancing toward Jennings, I add, “Please look after my friend for me.”

“Don’t worry,” Jennings assures me. “She’ll be safe with me and my team.”

“Come on,” Seth says, grabbing my wrist and taking me to the car.

The moment I’m seated beside him, he steps on the gas and drives toward our home. His mask of utter calm gradually falls off, revealing his true emotions.

The car comes to an abrupt halt outside our cottage. Without a word, he opens the door to his side and climbs out.

Feeling the weight of his emotions, I hurry after him. Pushing the fenced gate aside, I jog forward as he opens the front door.

With a sudden move, Seth grabs my wrist and pulls me inside.

The door slams shut as I’m pushed against it roughly.
