Gills. He has gills.

He really is like a shark man. Which brings me back to the word his sister used.Twice. What the heck is a frenzy on this planet? ’Cause I have certainly watched my fair share of shark week, but I don’t think that’s what she was talking about.

“I’m sorry about the splash by,” he says. “It’s not exactly polite, given our situation, but I haven’t seen them in a while because of the training program.”

“The frenzy thing?” I guess that’s what he means by situation.

“It’s what I wanted to talk about,” he swallows, “before they descended on us. Can you come sit with me, pup?”

Ma’xon pats the spot on the couch next to him, but I’m still thinking about how much we couldn’t take our hands off oneanother on our date. He’s being very cautious now, beyond taking me to the bathroom he has done the absolute most to keep his hands to himself.

I take a deep breath and dive head first into the new sea I’ve found myself in. He looks at me intently as I walk up to him, swallowing noticeable as I stand between his legs. This is where I’ve wanted to be for hours, I remind myself. There’s no reason for worries. I plop down onto one of his spread thighs and pick up his hand to hold in both of mine.

“You can tell me anything, Daddy.”

Chapter 6

Ma'xon

My hearts stop.

Hearing her say that word, syphoning out all the intricate little details of her voice that I couldn’t hear in that human suit? I can’t open my mouth for fear I’m going to bite her instead of explaining the mating frenzy. My mouth won’t stop watering and even before Pri’za arrived I struggled to hold myself back.

Seeing Odette unafraid of me to start and then smiling at my family was like being lost in the seas above and falling onto the softest beach. Any apprehension I had about her adjusting to life here is floating away. She slips into it all like water between my fingers.

Now the only thing that needs work is us. And my hopes are rising at that the longer her little hands hold my massive fingers. I swallow again, trying to keep my mating saliva to myself as I think about our size differences.

“The frenzy is amatingcycle,” I start, my face heating like a younger male attempting to snare his first love.

“So really like werewolves.” She nods and her cheeks turn a lovely red shade.

“What is a werewolf?”

“Oh, they’re a classic shifter monster,” she says excitedly. “They usually are people bitten by another werewolf, and on the full moon they transform into half-wolf people, and sometimes if the book is really good the werewolf love interest goes into this uncontrollable heat and they have to fuck it out of their system. Too much hair for me, but I get the appeal.”

“And what is the appeal?” I ask, unable to keep the amusement from my voice. Already I love her voice. The way her lips form the words and her finger flex around mine when she says uncontrollable heat has my hearts racing.

“It’s the undeniable need, the big scary monster overpowering its mate, and the fluids.”

“This wasn’t part of your quiz.” I grin.

My free hand moves to support her, rubbing up and down her damp back. Even as my brain wants to shut off any other thought outside of claiming Odette, there is also the more selfish need to provide for her. Even to simply get her another glass of water, to build her a dry sauna in the back of the house, even to parade her around as my precious mate in everything I can possibly buy her—I want to give her everything I have.

“I mean, I told it I liked romance novels and after everything I had to admit on that quiz I was going to keep something to myself.” She huffs a little before her pout softens into a smile. “Is that what your frenzy is like?”

“Surprisingly yes,” I say, relaxing a little more on the couch. “It can last anywhere from a day to five days. Usually the purpose of them is to breed, but humans are unique in that they can’t reproduce outside of their own kind.”

I pause and wait to see how Odette will react to that. Her eyebrows rose when I said five days, but as her shoulders relaxand her hands start to wander up my forearm, I don’t believe she really cares about having kids. Another note of apprehension to float out of my subconscious. This is going surprisingly well.

“Axilarian’s generally mate for life,” I continue. “Our saliva produces an aphrodisiac that helps ease the intensity and friction of the cycle. The bite is a clean and—”

“Oh my god,” she gasps. “That’s how you made me cum? Do you only do that once?”

She stares at me with an intensity I struggle to read, but I won’t lie to her. Her quiz results were clear about what she enjoyed sexually, but practice is different from theory.

“It’s common for many adult Axilarian’s to have multiple bites in one frenzy cycle, but I understand if that doesn’t appeal to you.”

“Oh no, I want to at least try, the first one hurt like a bitch but the payoff was so worth it.”
