“Some of us are just better,” she says. “Now what’s on Earth?”

“Odette needs something.”

It will not be my lips she pries the stuffed animal secret out from. When the topic of Marbles first came up, my mate seemed a little embarrassed about needing a plush toy to sleep with. It’s not something we have for Axilarian youth, but I know many people who still chew on their favourite fefe toy into their eighties.

Comfort is comfort.

“Fine,” she huffs. “Is Odette going with you?”

“I was approved for a one seater.”

“She can stay with us if she wants while you’re away. Closer to town and the girls have been dying for a sleepover. They don’t exactly get that just because they are of similar age, that Odette may not want to play dress up.”

I lose track of the conversation for a moment thinking about the last time she did play dress up for me. The very strict instructions I received to observe the fashion show to completion and not try to feel her up every chance I got was maddening. We made it through one outfit before I was dragging her down to the floor to devour her pussy.

“Does she know you’re not going to take her?”

I snap back to our call. “No, and don’t tell her I am going to earth. I want to surprise her when I return with her things.”

There is a beat of silence over the comm and I wonder if my sister has simply hung up on me.

“And how will you explain your absence to your new mate who you already neglect?”

“I do not—”

“Where is she right now?”

Having a second offspring was the worst mistake my parents ever made. My life would be oceans easier as an only child.

“She’s at home,” I grumble. “You don’t have to be right all the time.”

“I do. And I won’t tell her you’re going to earth.”

She hangs up on that promise. It’s good that she at least approved of my idea to surprise Odette.

The sooner I leave, the sooner I will be back home in her arms. I’m not sure how I will handle going without her touch for more than a few hours. Her laughter won’t be in my ears. I check the travel confirmation once more. I can leave as soon as I’m ready, but all I’m ready for is to be back. This meeting doesn’t need me here, it’s not my job anyway.

On my way home again, I leave a voice note for Pri’za.

“If you want to attend the ToA meeting today, you better get to it now. I’ll be back in two days.”

Odette is baking when I get home. From the stairs, I can smell the warm sweet scent wafting through the air.

She’s singing too.

This is the first time I’ve ever heard it in real life. I know what her career involved back on earth, recording ads and what not for radio broadcasting. But there is something mystical about hearing this unedited version of her. The rise in her voice’s pitch, the little wobble when it goes a bit too low for her register. It’s hypnotising.

My hearts beat wildly as I climb the stairs two at a time to get to her. The curtain over the door sways gently in the breeze and tangles with my tail. She shrieks when she turns, but quickly dissolves into laughter at my predicament.

“You’re home early,” she says with a smile, arranging chunky disks on a wire rack.

My thoughts are as twisted as the curtain on me. “What are those?”

“Cookies, I had a craving,” she says into the microheater, another tray of sweet disks placed inside.

“You have a beautiful voice.”

She turns around quickly, face flushed from something more than baking. Loose hairs frame her shoulders and cheeks. The most beautiful being in the galaxy, in the universe. I’m practically floating when she’s within arms reach.
