He had a flash of the future before she opened up the door. He saw them being in love, as a real unit, two people with one riveting soul. He didn’t want to be with someone merely for political associations. He wanted to be in love.

When she finally opened up the door, he nearly fainted at the sight before him.

Chapter 5

Scarlettsatonthebed, looking over the bedroom that was her space—a place to call her own. She liked the sound of that. She really liked it.

She also liked Grux. He was sweet and took what she said without questioning everything else about her. He made her feel confident and comfortable. She couldn’t remember the last time someone made her feel like that.

The soft knock on her door pulled her head up. She scooted herself off her bed and walked across her room. Opening the door just a crack, she held back and stared at Grux.

He gave her a shy smile. “Hey, I just wanted to make sure you had everything you needed before I head to bed.”

She took in his gentle expression and the way his shoulders hung loose.

Pulling the door open, she gave him a grin. “A little company would be nice.”

She didn’t know if he could come in or not. She wasn’t sure entirely where they stood. They weren’t anything, yet she felt there was a chance they could be.

“Are you sure?” He raised a single purple eyebrow. “I don’t want to impose.”

“Come in.” She nodded. “Besides, I think I need someone to talk to after everything.”

Grux stepped into her room, and she shut the door behind him. She walked back to her bed and seated herself on the edge. “I would like to thank you for everything.”

“You don’t need to.” He gave her a soft smile. “You deserve this.”

She smiled back at him, knowing he meant those words. “Thank you anyway. It’s a dream come true to finally be able to settle without worry about the Flemlars finding me.”

It was all thanks to Grux. Everything was thanks to Grux, and she found it hard to deny she had feelings for him. He just made it so easy.

“Well, you’re welcome.” He patted her knee, his fingers gentle on her pants. It sent a shiver up her spine.

She inhaled deeply, trying to calm her twisting stomach. She’d hardly had emotions besides fear since being bought. She never thought she would be able to find happiness, but she was sure this was what it felt like.

The flutter in her stomach was a good thing. It warmed her, reminding her she was safe.

“You know, I never got to tell you how brave I thought you were. Surviving everything for as long as you did.”

A heated blush rolled over her face. “What?”

“I do.” He nodded. “I really do.”

She was stunned. No one had said those words to her. No one really knew her past. She didn’t know what to say, but she knew she wanted to thank him.

She tilted closer, placing her hand over his. She gave him a gentle squeeze before she leaned forward and gave him a kiss on the cheek.

“Thank you.” She gazed at him. “It means a lot.”

The air seemed to shift, and Scarlett suddenly wanted him closer. She wanted a kiss. The simple fact was that she wantedhim.

Grux pulled a hand up, cupping her cheek. He chuckled, “I should let you get some sleep.”

She didn’t want him to go. She didn’t want to be alone.

She leaned forward again and kissed him on the lips this time. It was gentle and slow, just as she imagined he would be if the roles had been reversed.

Grux leaned into the kiss, and she liked it. She felt his hand twist around her waist, pulling her off the bed and into his lap. She wrapped her arms around his neck, and the kiss deepened.
