That made him blink. “Oh.”

While he said she could go anywhere in the castle’s lands, she usually didn’t leave the palace itself. The palatial lands were a bit far if something were to happen.

“Is something wrong, Your Highness?”

Shaking his head, Grux turned out of her room and headed back down the hallway at a jog.

If she was going that far, he hoped like hell no one had decided to bother her. Or that no one had come around to collect the bounty that was no doubt hanging over her head from his failed mission. The lands were practically touching the city, and other Lorrians would be able to see her!

Damn it. I should’ve come sooner.

Chapter 8

Theflashofthelittle baby insignia at the bottom corner of the mirror would haunt Scarlett for the rest of her life.

After she’d left the bathroom, she had wandered out of her room, stumbling down the hall and ignoring the concerned words from her servant. She didn’t know what to think now that she had an answer to the question she hadn’t even considered asking herself.

Of course, she should’ve known. Her cycles had always been regular, despite the transition from Earth to Xoyosis. And the last time she’d had a cycle? Back before she’d met Grux, that was for sure.

The thought made her want to cry.

What was he going to say when she told him? Would he be upset and demand her to get rid of their baby, or would he abandon her and force her to figure things out for herself?

She had no idea how she was going to give birth to an alien baby. Besides life with the Flemlars, who hadn’t had a pregnancy in her time, she had only seen pregnancies on Earth. Not like many pregnant women passed through the bar where she used to work.

Was there a different gestation period? Were there different rules on how she was supposed to care for one? Or even herself?

Uncertainty swirled inside her mind, making her feel dizzy.

Scarlett leaned against the tall rock wall beside her. She’d wandered far enough to get lost and had resigned herself to being stuck here until someone found her either alive or dead. Whoever that may be.

Rubbing her hands over her face, Scarlett slid down the rock wall until her butt hit the solid ground. She curled her knees up to her chest and buried her face in them.

Even if Grux didn’t want this baby, she’d figure out a way to raise it by herself. She wouldn’t be able to bear giving it up or taking something that destroyed her pregnancy all together. She’d always wanted to be a mother, even if this wasn’t exactly how she pictured it beginning.

Her hand snuck down to clutch the shirt covering her stomach. Hopefully, she would be sent back home to Earth before she gave birth. And hopefully, her family was willing to help her through the pregnancy.

She’d been away from them for so long that she had no clue what they’d think once she told them what kind of grandchild she carried for them.

A voice off in the distance made her lift her head slowly and listen. She couldn’t exactly tell what it was saying or where it was coming from, but she knew the person was close by.

“Scarlett!” she heard faintly.

“Hello?” she called back.

“Scarlett!”

Standing slowly, she pushed herself up from the ground and straightened out her shirt. “I’m here!”

She heard the sound of shoes hitting gravel, coming right for her. She tucked her arms around herself and waited. Maybe one of the guards was coming to retrieve her and put her back into her cage.

“Scarlett!” Her heart lit up.Grux?

“I’m here!” She turned around to the sound of his voice.

He appeared only a few moments later, relief exuding from him. “There you are.”

She tried to smile at him but knew it came across as unbelievable once she saw him frown.
