Scarlett dropped to her knees. “Please, pleasedon’t send me back. I’ll do anything.”

The king laughed. “Anything? That’s quite the statement.”

“Father,” Grux growled again, kneeling to pick her up off the floor.

“What?” He barked out another laugh. “Let’s at least listen to the girl’s terms.”

Clutching onto Grux’s arm, Scarlett swayed on her feet.

“My family will pay you double whatever the bounty hunter is offering. I can guarantee it.”

“Really,” he murmured, lacing his fingers together. “It’s quite a hefty sum.”

“Whatever it is, I know they’ll double it.” If they were ever able to get through to them.

Her entire body shook as she spoke. She was grateful Grux’s arm was around her to hold her up, or else she’d have been sagging right back down to the floor again.

If the Flemlars sent a bounty hunter after her, that meant they were serious about getting her back. Before, it had been a game of cat and mouse. Their faith in Grux to return her had clearly been exhausted. They were now desperate enough to headhunt her.

It wasn’t a good sign.

“I’ll need to think about this.”

The king unfolded himself from his chair and stood.

“How long,” Grux demanded.

“As long as I need, boy.”

With that, the king turned and headed out of the room. A large door shut behind him with a residual sound of finality and Scarlett let out a shaky breath.

“It’s going to be okay.” Pulling her against his chest, he felt terrible that it had all come to this.

If his father wasn’t so gung-ho about using her connection to Earth as a bargaining chip, she would be long gone out of this galaxy by now and safely returned to her own without having to worry about some damn bounty hunter trailing after her.

And he knew his father wouldn’t choose the bounty over political gain. They were royalty. They had money. He just wanted to increase the chance that Scarlett would do whatever it took to not go back, including choosing him to strengthen their planets’ relations.

It was all so ridiculous that he didn’t blame Scarlett’s nerves for being completely fried at this point.

“What am I going to do?” she mumbled.

He rubbed her back, hating his father for the way she trembled. “We’ll figure it out.”

She pulled back from him suddenly, tears shining in the corners of her eyes. “Grux… I need to tell you something.”

He frowned, cupping her face. “It’s all right, Scarlett. I’m not going to let them hurt you.”

“No… no, it’s not that.” She wrapped her hands around his wrists, her bottom lip quivering as she tried to maintain eye contact with him.

“What? What happened?”

“I… I’m pregnant.”

He couldn’t help but stare, the words barely computing inside of his head. What… did she say? That she was…

“Did… did you hear me?”

“You… you’re…”
