She had fled from those horrible people to make a life for herself. The goal of that new life was to find a partner and make a family. She’d been hopeful with Grux, but perhaps that hope had blinded her, along with her lust.

“Scarlett, you have to stop!”

Pumping her legs harder, she tried to put more distance between them. But it was harder and harder to maintain her pace as her breath caught in her throat, and her vision blurred with tears.

Grux was loving getting to know Scarlett. A part of him certainly felt guilty about leading her on, keeping the information about the family that was on the lookout for her a secret. But he was just having so much fun. He had been feeling a genuine connection that was unlike anything he’d ever experienced.

Except, he couldn’t sleep with her knowing this secret that would wrench them apart. He didn’t blame her for deciding to flee, even if his legs were longer and stronger than hers, she was willing to give it a go. He admired that about her, but he couldn’t let her get away.

“Fucking idiot,” Grux muttered to himself. He never should have gotten attached.

He ran after her, impressed by the speed and strength of that little body. He galloped easily up to her as she cut through a park across the road.

“Scarlett, you have to stop!”he bellowed.

She glanced back at him, still gorgeous and courageous, continuing onward without a second thought. Grux didn’t want to hurt her, so he reached out, trying to lightly slow her down. He managed to grasp the edge of her shirt and yanked at it softly.

“Scarlett, please let me explain!” he yelled at her.

But she simply wouldn’t stop. She reached behind herself and slapped his hand away, which only really helped for a few seconds. Grux huffed and then sped up until he was directly in front of her. She gasped as he picked her up and placed her on his shoulder like a misbehaving child.

“Let go of me,” Scarlett demanded through gritted teeth.

She acted like a toddler as she bashed her fists against his back and slammed her feet into his chest. If he had been anyone else, maybe a human, she would stand a fighting chance. She even reached around to his face and attempted to claw at his eyes.

“Scarlett!”

He took her by the hips once they had found a shady spot in the park beneath a wide tree with drooping branches. It looked private enough, so Grux placed her down on the grass on her back and pinned her to the ground by her wrists.

She shook like a fly caught in a spider’s web.

“You son of a bitch,” she murmured. “You lied to me! You fucking lied to me to get me back to those monsters!”

“Scarlett, can you please listen…”

Scarlett launched a thick piece of spit in Grux’s direction. He managed to dodge it, but his patience was wearing thin. He placed a hand over Scarlett’s mouth, gently preventing her from speaking or flinging more bodily fluids in his direction.

“Since you won’t shut up,” Grux growled. “This is how we’ll do things. Stay still and listen for a second, Scarlett.”

She continued to shake like a fly, an instinct she clearly hadn’t lost since even after being captured all those years ago.

So Grux leaned in close, keeping his head far enough away so she couldn’t headbutt him.

“I amnottaking you back to them,” Grux spoke with conviction. “Do you hear me? I am not going to return you back to those people. I am taking you back to Lorr to hide you.”

Finally, Scarlett settled down and began listening. She gazed up at Grux, her eyes dark and exhausted, but she paid attention to every word.

“You can stay on my father’s palatial lands,” Grux continued. “They are very secluded and hidden. I am not going to turn you into anyone. I promise.”

She was as still as a stone. He searched her face, curious as to whether it was all a part of her escape tactics.

“I’m going to remove my hand now,” he said. “Please don’t spit on me.”

He did, and Scarlett remained still.

She stared at him with confusion, her eyebrows furrowed and eyes glimmering with possibility. “Can you… can you get off me now?”

Grux often forgot his own strength, so he immediately let go of her wrists. She stayed lying on the grass as she rubbed them, continuing to stare off into the distance.
