Hewas writing.Thescene poured out of him effortlessly, words filling the page.Heonly lifted his fingers from the keyboard for an occasional sip of his coffee or to gaze out the window at the forest as he searched his brain for just the right word.Hedidn’t notice the passing of time.Hisentire focus was on the scene he was writing, picking up whereHazelhad left off by telling the story from the soldier’s perspective.

“Adam?”Hazel’svoice came from the doorway of his office, and he hastily closed the laptop.Shit.Mildembarrassment swirled through him. He’dbeen writing a scene inherbook.Shewas going to think he was a weirdo.Atbest.

Hespun in his chair, and the second his eyes landed on her, all of the earlier panic he’d been feeling felt laughable.Itdidn’t matter that she was leaving.Itdidn’t matter that the future was uncertain.Shewas a flame, and he was a moth.Hiswings were probably going to get singed, and he couldn’t bring himself to give a fuck.Notwhen he was looking atHazelall adorably sleep rumpled with his robe wrapped around her body.Hisblood heated at the sight of her as he remembered the weight of her perfectly full breasts in his hands, the softness of her skin against his, the way she’d come so hard around his dick.

Asleepy grin stretched across her pretty face, and she tucked a strand of her golden brown hair behind her ear. “Areyou writing?” she asked, eyes shining brightly despite the fact she’d just woken up.

“I, um.Well,” he said, rubbing a hand over the back of his neck. “Iwas reading your chapters, which are amazing, and thenIguessIwas writing, but it’s stupid andIshouldn’t have done it.”

Shestepped closer, frowning in a way that had those little lines digging in between her eyes. “Whatdo you mean?”

Adamhad never been a man who made excuses or tried to avoid the consequences.Hewinced slightly and opened the laptop back up. “Iwas just playing around after reading your chapters.I…Iwrote what could be the next scene,” he said, his chest feeling tight, his blood pounding in his ears as he waited forHazelto tell him that he was a creep.

Instead, she took another few steps closer, her eyebrows raised. “Youdid?”Herexpression was unreadable, but she didn’t seem to be mad. “CanIsee?”

Heclosed his eyes for a second before disconnecting the laptop from its power source and handing it to her.Shetook it from him, their fingers brushing, and leaned her hip against the edge of the desk, facing him as she read.

Hewas staring, drinking up her reactions like a man dying of thirst.Ithad been a long time since he’d watched anyone read something he’d written.Especiallysomeone who meant something to him, likeHazeldid, as much as it scared him.Shefrowned slightly and his stomach dropped.Thenthe corner of her mouth pulled up in a smile and his heart thumped against his chest.Asthough there were some invisible bond between them because she was reading his words.Wordsabout a character she’d come up with.

Theroom was silent as she read, her eyes skimming across the screen.Outside, the sun was climbing slowly into the sky, poking its way through the pine trees.Birdschirped happily.Needingsomething to do,Adampicked up his coffee and drank the last of it.

Afterseveral minutes,Hazelcarefully set the laptop down.Sheleaned against his desk, facing him.

“Adam,” she said, and he actually held his breath. “It’ssogood.”

Itwas as though she’d doused him in sunshine. “Yeah?” he asked. “Ididn’t mean to overstep.Ijust got caught up reading andIjust had the urge—”

Shecut him off by pressing her index finger to his lips. “Ihave a crazy idea.”

Hiseyebrows rose. “What?” he asked, speaking the words against her finger, which was still pressed against his lips.Sheremoved her finger, blinking rapidly.Wasshe…nervous?

“Whatif…what if we wrote this book together?Like, co-writers?”

Heblinked slowly. “Writethe book together?”

Shebit her lip, nodding. “Yeah.Wecan plot it out together, and thenI’llwrite the scenes fromMary’spoint of view, and you write the scenes fromSamuel’s.Which,Imean, great name, by the way,” she said quickly, her cheeks going pink.

Heswallowed thickly. “Youwant to write a book with me?”Hisbody was still, but his mind was flying.Didhe want to jump back into writing?Whatabout her contract?Herex-husband/editor?Butif they were writing a book, which would take months, it would tie them together…maybe she’d stay.Maybe…

Maybeit was the perfect solution.Maybeit was everythingAdamhadn’t realized he’d needed.

“Yeah,Adam.Iwant to write a book with you.”

Theireyes met, and a wave of heat so intense it nearly stole his breath washed overAdam.Hecould tellHazelfelt it too from the way her eyes both widened and darkened.

Herose from the chair, tugging open the sash of his robe, revealing her naked body to him, all creamy skin and soft curves.Heslid an arm around her waist, pressing her breasts against his chest and lifting her onto the desk.

“Adam,” she whispered just before his mouth crashed into hers.Shemoaned against his mouth as he slid his tongue against hers.Shewound her arms around his neck, her legs around his waist, pulling him closer.

Hekissed her deeply, thoroughly, losing track of time until they were both moaning and gasping for air.

“Hellyes,Iwant to write a book with you,” he said, kissing along her jaw and down her neck. “Butthat means you have to stay.Youhave to stay with me.”

Maybeit wasn’t fair for him to ask that of her, but he wanted her to choose him.Tochoose to stay.Tochoose this book, whatever it might turn into.Tochoose the future he could see shimmering in front of them.

“OfcourseI’llstay,” she breathed, her head tipped back to allow him better access to all of her sensitive skin.Helicked a path up her neck, making her shudder in his arms.

“ThankGod,” he whispered, kissing her again.Heslid his arm from around her waist and between her eagerly parted thighs, teasing along the seam of her pussy.Insome distant part of his brain, he knew he should ask her if she was sore, if this was okay.
