Thesecond ring was very classic and traditional, with a large solitaire diamond on a band of yellow gold.

“Thisone?”Adamasked, holding it up.

Jackshook his head. “It’stoo…basic,Iguess.Thatcould be anyone’s engagement ring.”Heflicked his gaze toLiam. “Nooffense.”

Hetilted his head. “Nonetaken.Oneperson’s basic is another’s perfection.”Jackwas reminded of howRosaliehad identified herself asQueenof theBasicBitches, and he bit back a smile.

Thethird ring was made out of white gold, and featured a large, round solitaire on top of an intricately criss-crossing band dotted with pave diamonds.

“Ilike this one better than the other two. It’smore interesting.Moreunique,”Jacksaid.

“Andwhat about this one?”Adamasked, picking up the final ring.

“That’sobviously the one,”Jacksaid casually, still leaning on the counter. “That’smuch moreHazelthan any of these others.”

Adamfrowned slightly. “It’smy favorite, too, but it’s not a diamond.Idon’t want her to be disappointed.”

“Thecenter stone is a pear-cut aquamarine,” saidLiam, cutting in. “Flankedwith a round moonstone on each side, surrounded by small diamonds on a delicate white gold band. It’sa very unique item. We’rehoping to get more in from this particular designer.”

“Whydo you like this one?” askedJack.Adamheld the ring between his fingers, gazing at it.

“Becausethe blue reminds me of the falls, and the moonstone reminds me of the legend that brought us together and changed our lives.Thisring feels like our story.”

“ThenIthink you have your answer.”

“Thisis the oneAutumnpicked, too.”Adamstared at the ring.

Jackgently plucked it from between his fingers and handed it toLiamwith a little flourish. “He’lltake it.”

Twenty-One

SometimesRosaliedidn’t understand whereCarriegot her energy.Howshe had the patience and focus to go through the same motions, listen to the same song, repeat shots and poses over and over and over again, but she did, and she did it all with a grace and professionalism that not many others in the industry had.

Theshoot was going well, and they’d been blessed with an overcast day, which made for excellent lighting, and naturally falling snowflakes. They’dlikely have to be enhanced in post production, but the natural beauty around them was so stunning that the editors would have an easy time achieving the ethereal vibe they were going for.

Thesun was setting, and the earlier clouds had cleared, painting the sky in hues of orange and soft purple as it sank behind the falls.AndwhileRosalieappreciated the beautiful sunset—when had she ever taken the time to appreciate a sunset inNewYork, she wondered—it meant that her long, busy day wasn’t over yet.Themoon was full tonight, and if possible,Carriewanted the real thing in the music video.

Theywere all gathered in a large tent, eating the catered dinner provided to them by a local restaurant, whileCarriereviewed that afternoon’s footage with the director and the assistant director.Shewas smiling, looking pleased with how everything was going.Rosaliealways loved watching her in action.Yes, she was a popstar, but she was also savvy as hell when it came to her marketing, and branding.Shewas truly the most creative personRosaliehad ever met.

Rosaliemunched on her red pepper and grilled chicken quesadilla as she fought the urge to check her phone for the twentieth time since they’d started their dinner break.Shehadn’t heard fromJacksince she’d blown him off, and she hadn’t texted him because…well, she was a chicken, in all honesty.Besides, what needed to be discussed had to be in person.Textingwouldn’t get them anywhere.

Carriesauntered over, her plate full with a mango avocado salad, roasted cauliflower bites, and a chicken and broccoli pasta that smelled amazing. “Anyword from hot cop?” she asked, plunking down besideRosalieand lifting a forkful of food to her mouth.

Rosalieshook her head. “No, butIhaven’t texted him yet, either.Iwill, though.Iknow we need to talk.”Sheset her plate down and rubbed her sweaty palms over her jeans.

Fora moment, they sat in peaceful companionship, the drumming rush of the falls outside like a soothing white noise.Atfirst,Rosaliehad been a bit taken aback at the constant pounding of the water, but now she found she liked it.Therewas something grounding about it, something almost hypnotic. She’dnever thought of herself as a nature lover, but spending time near the beautiful waterfall, on the edge of a forest covered in snow-dusted pines, was making her think otherwise.

Alot of things inGossamerFallswere making her question what she thought she knew about herself.

“Hey, do you think during the night shoot portion, you could take some behind the scenes footage on your phone?” askedCarrie, chewing thoughtfully. “OhmyGod, this is good.Wehave to go to this restaurant tomorrow.”

“Sure.Youwant some sneak peek, teaser type clips for social media?”

Shenodded. “Yeah.Instagram,TikTok.It’llbe a casual drop that this is the next single, and the video’s coming soon.”

“Perfect.I’lltry to get a bunch of different angles and shots and clips, and then we can edit together the best ones.Doyou want me to drop something on social media now, like a tiny clue about what’s happening?”

“That’sa great idea.Maybepost a picture of the falls or the moon with a lyric from the song and the looking eyes emoji?”
