"Are you sure?"

"Yeah."

I can't help but notice the pain on his face as he sets the twins down.

"Onyx."

"I need some water." He mutters, standing up and walking away.

I don't like this one bit. Something inside of me is screaming that it's not a good idea to let him just walk away from me like that. Like I will regret it. Since the twins are still asleep, I follow after him, seeing how he is gulping down water like he is dying of thirst.

"Onyx."

"Stop it." He grumbles, "I'm fine."

"You're not." I insist, watching him, "What's going on?"

"Nothing."

"Please."

He sighs, his hand dropping from his lips.

"You should see this."

"See what?"

"Just follow me."

I follow him to our bedroom, confused as he starts to strip off his clothing. My eyes widen in horror when I see patches of his dragon scales on his skin. It looks raw and painful, but I don't understand what is happening. Why does he look like this? What is he not telling me?

"Onyx, what is going on?" I ask, seeing how weak he is.

"I've never been away from the mountains for this long." He tells me, looking down at his skin, "I didn't know what would happen."

"Onyx, talk to me."

"My body is turning back to my true form. If I'm away from the mountains for too long, then I will shift and not be able to get back. It's a curse, honestly. There is nothing I can do to stop it. It's just the way that it is."

"But what does that mean?" I ask, feeling my chest tightening.

"It means that I can't stay here. I have to return home. I've stayed away too long as it is."

"Can't you just get used to this land?" I beg him, taking a step closer, "I can't lose you."

"Hannah."

"No!" I cry out, my chest aching, "I don't want to be without you. Please. We can go back to the mountain and stay there."

"But you're not a dragon."

"So?"

"I don't want you to get hurt."

"But I want to be with you."

"I'm sorry, Hannah. I love you and I will do everything that I can to make this work."
