“Do what?” His husky voice makes me think he knows exactly what I mean.

A knock sounds from the door just before Abby walks in without waiting. “Oh!” She covers her eyes. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to interrupt.”

I step back from Ryan. “It’s fine, Abby. This is Ryan’s idea of getting comfortable. Nothing is going on.”

Abby lets out a big sigh as she drops her hand and inspects Ryan head to toe. She lets her tote-bag purse drop to the ground. “Good. Because you’re only allowed to kiss right now.”

“So we’ve been told.” I raise my fingers to my mouth but stop myself from biting a nail. “But trust me. I don’t want to anyway. Why weren’t either of us told what to expect?”

Abby grimaces. “I can’t answer for Ryan, but I’m so sorry about your side of it. Kevin assures me that he would have told me about the werewolf part before we went live.” Abby scans Ryan with her gaze again before she catches his eye and blushes at his grin. “Because you asked to meet him before the beta testing was ready to launch, the two of you missed out on the training.”

“Training?”

Abby crouches down to dig through her purse. “Kevin prepared a manual for this.”

She pulls out a thick document in a loose-leaf notebook. When I take it from Abby, it hangs heavy in my hand. “Just a little light reading for us?” I ask.

The pages go slick against my fingers as I flip them to find sections about werewolf history, evolution, and culture. I chuckle at the absurdity of the situation. I’ve got a smoking-hot werewolf who wants to dominate me, while he’s got a control freak on his hands. To learn to deal with each other, we have to read a thick book of rules.

When Ryan reaches for the document, I let him take it, then I ask Abby, “Any chance you can give us the abbreviated version?”

“I haven’t read through it all myself.”

“Well, let me tell you one thing. These guys aren’t used to women having a mind of their own.” I turn my attention to Ryan. “Are you going to be able to adapt to that?”

He licks his lips and drops his gaze to my chest. “So you don’t want me to leave?”

I scowl at him. Ryan is the sexiest man I’ve ever met. I would be a fool not to get him in my bed, even just for one night. “I’m not sure.”

“I can smell your uncertainty,” he taunts, and the look he gives me practically sears my skin.

“Smell?” Abby asks just before her eyes widen with understanding. “Oh.”

I let out a sigh. “See what I’m dealing with here, Abby?”

“Mm-hmm.” Abby offers me a smirk. “Sucks to be you.”

I glance at the sexy werewolf, who’s wearing a smirk of his own. Okay, so maybe I overreacted earlier, because I don’t mind his heated gaze or the way his kisses felt. I clear my throat before my thoughts go too far. Maybe I should let him try again, considering he didn’t understand how human women work.

“Fine. He can stay.” I point at Ryan. “But he needs a manual that he will actually read too.”

Abby points at the book in Ryan’s hands. “It’s the second half of that binder.”

Ryan shakes his head, but he doesn’t appear the least bit apologetic with that grin on his face. “Perhaps Charlie can teach me what I need to know.”

Abby lets out a snort before she covers her mouth and shrugs, making it clear that she’s not apologizing either. She looks at me. “You pushed the button.” When I glare at her, she adds, “I’m going to let myself out now.”

The door clicks shut behind her, and I turn to see Ryan thumbing through the rule book.

“This is a lot of useless information. I think we should figure it out on our own.” He pauses, grinning. “If that’s okay with you.”

The idea of reading through the heavy manual doesn’t appeal to me, either, and Ryan seems to be trying to adjust, so I nod. “Sure. Let’s see if we can figure this out on our own.”

Ryan steps closer and lowers his voice. “Maybe we could practice what we do know.” He raises his eyebrows as if to ask a question as he grips my arms lightly.

His touch makes me weak, and chases away any anger that lingers. I lean in and let him kiss me, and as I get lost in our mate connection, I begin to think that trying to work this out might not be a bad idea after all.
