“You are definitely a control freak. I live in the human world. Not the depths of an impenetrable forest.”

I grin at him. “Well, that sure explains your hangover.”

He opens his mouth to speak but seems to realize I’m right, and he shuts it again.

Time to change the subject. “I don’t have to work today, so we should do something fun together.”

“We’ll go on a date.” His voice is firm, making it sound like an order.

I frown at him then decide his ego is bruised enough. “Yes.”

“We need good sandwiches, chips, and brownies.” Ryan pauses then, catching himself, and gives me a sexy grin. “And whatever else you might want.” He nudges me with his shoulder.

I chuckle. “Sure. The grocery store has a great takeout counter, and we can walk along the coast too.”

His eyes twinkling with mischief, he leans in close. “As long as there are a few private places to kiss you properly.”

I place a hand on his firm chest and feel the warmth of his skin. Ryan brushes his lips over mine and pulls back, leaving me wanting more.

“We’ll find some,” I whisper.

“Good.” Ryan kisses me again, this time giving me what I crave. I can taste the salty residue of bacon and the flavor of my sexy werewolf. He may be used to telling women what to do, but the way his tongue gives and takes in rhythm with mine makes me think he can learn to do the same with a relationship.

When we break apart, Ryan lets out a big sigh. “We should—I mean, can we get married soon?”

My desire is so ramped up that I can’t think of much beyond devouring him, and I resist the urge to say “tonight,” especially since he managed to ask instead of command. “I’m not sure when we can, according to the rules. I’ll ask Abby.” I stand. “You should shower, and then we can go get the supplies.”

An hour later, we’ve made a trip to the store and filled a backpack with an assortment of food for our picnic. As we walk, Ryan reaches for my hand, and I ask, “Is it strange for you to be dating a human?”

“Yes.” He gazes up at the sky, which is deep blue with white puffy clouds floating lazily across. “Being with your mate in a pack is straightforward. There is no doubt you’re going to be together forever.” He glances at me. “But there is something fun about the suspense with us.”

We reach the rocky trail that is a walking path to view the ocean, and Ryan stops, so I turn to him. He threads the fingers of his free hand in mine. “Human girls definitely taste better.”

“Do they?”

He nods, leans down to kiss me, and grins as he breaks away. “So much better.”

I notice a section of the walk with a small clearing under some trees. It looks like a nice place for lunch, so I point to it. “We’ll eat over there.”

Ryan clears his throat, making me turn to look.

“Oh.” I realize I just gave him an order. “Would you like to eat over there?”

He grins. “We’re getting better at this.” We begin setting out the picnic, Ryan snapping out the blanket and laying it down.

While I work, I think about what he said. The two of us are able to cooperate over little things, sure, but I do wonder how our relationship is going to work when it comes to bigger decisions.

Then Ryan sits on the blanket and pats it, inviting me to join him, and the warmth that rushes through me makes me willing to try.

Chapter Seven

We’re nearly done eating when a cold ocean breeze slices through the warm air, and we both glance out over the water to see dark clouds approaching.

I turn to Ryan. “A storm is coming in fast.”

Ryan polishes off the last bit of a sandwich and licks mustard off his fingers. “Rain?” He scans me with his gaze. “You in a wet dress…”

I go there too. “You in a shirt stuck to your body.”
