“You’re not listening,” Ryan tells me, gripping my wrists to keep me from peeling off his towel.

We both took hot showers, separately, when we returned from the park, and I’m in a thin silk robe that I know hugs my curves and leaves little to the imagination.

“I’m struggling to keep control, Charlie,” he says. “We dodged a bullet earlier, and now I need you to be strong for us.”

“It’s not like my apartment is bugged or anything.”

Ryan mumbles something under his breath that sounds a lot like, “But my mind is.”

The idea that his alpha could be tapping into his thoughts for no reason seems ridiculous.

I undo my robe’s tie, letting the smooth fabric slip through my hand, and shrug out of the garment. It slithers down to my feet, and Ryan’s chest expands with a sharp inhale.

I smile. “Then perhaps I’ll just give you a little visual foreplay.”

Ryan groans. “You’re going to be the death of me.” He drops his towel too.

I sashay to the bed with him close at my heels. The mattress sinks beneath me as I sit then crawl back to lean up on my elbows, taking in his amazing body as he climbs over me.

But a shout interrupts us. “Ryan!” a male voice barks, a command strong enough that fear slices through me.

I hear footsteps thudding across the floor toward my bedroom, and Ryan grabs his towel from the floor, tossing it to me so I can cover up. I catch it midair.

A man enters the room, and I recognize him. Kevin Black. He glares at Ryan without a word, and Ryan bows his head like he’s submitting to a king. I suppose he is, in a way, since Kevin is his alpha’s right-hand man.

My fear is shoved aside, panic taking over. “Hey!” The towel is damp on my skin as I clutch it to my chest and scramble up to my knees. “Whatever you’re mad about, it was my fault. He warned?—”

Ryan cuts me off. “I take full responsibility, sir. Charlie just found out about us. She’s just a human who doesn’t know any better.”

Blood beginning to boil, I huff. I can’t believe he just basically called me stupid. “I knew full well what I was doing. I was the one who pushed you into this, Ryan.”

He gives me a little shake of his head, but I ignore the warning, wrapping the towel around my chest and tucking under the end to make it stay. “And of course I knew better.”

“You did?” Kevin asks.

A little voice in my head warns me that it’s time to shut up, but I don’t listen. “Yes, I did. But not having sex until we’re married is a stupid rule. I’m not marrying some guy before I know if he’s any good in bed.”

Kevin chuckles, but I don’t think he’s amused. “Your pleasure should not be your biggest concern.” He narrows his eyes. “Get dressed. You’re both coming with me.”

I open my mouth, about to object, but the look in Ryan’s eyes makes me pause, remembering how I initiated our meeting on a whim, without any thought for the consequences. This time, my impulsive actions will affect the man I—the man I care about deeply.

The wooden floor is cold and hard under my feet, and my lower lip begins to tremble with the urge to cry. I bite into it, and the sharp pain helps to keep the tears at bay. My head swims with visions of being chained in a dark cave with wolves circling me.

My throat is thick, and I gaze over at Ryan. Something flickers in his eyes, and he says, “Sir. If I may.”

Kevin inclines his head. “Yes.”

“Charlie is afraid and doesn’t know much about how we do things.”

Kevin’s ice-blue eyes chill me when our gazes lock. “Ryan came dangerously close to disobeying his alpha. And you—” He sighs, and it feels like his anger is subsiding. “You didn’t know you were playing with fire.”

“Where are we going?”

“To my office, where I’ll explain the reason for that rule to you and Abby.”

Kevin’s expression is kind now, and I can’t help but notice how his eyes are mesmerizing, much like Ryan’s. He’s got a few decades on us, judging by the fine lines around his eyes, but he’s handsome. I get why Abby has a crush on him. Still, I suspect he’s not a pushover, and my stomach knots up with nerves as I gaze at him.

The two men move to leave the room, and I go to join Ryan, who is getting dressed. “Ryan? Did I ruin this for us?”
