“I’m not.”

My jaw drops in surprise, but then I squint at him, wondering if this whole thing is a joke. After a second, I chuckle. “Okay. I’ll bite.”

“I sure hope you do.”

I ignore that comment. “If you aren’t human, then what are you?”

“You really don’t know.” Ryan blows out a whoosh of breath. “Whoever designed this matchmaking app has a lot of glitches to fix. Got any wine in your fridge?”

I study the man before me and try to imagine what he might be other than human. “Maybe.”

“Good.” Ryan walks toward the kitchen. “You’re going to need it.”

Chapter Four

Ryan chooses from my cabinet the giant wine glass Val gave me as a joke, which holds nearly a whole bottle of wine. He pours too much and hands it to me.

“Sit,” he orders.

I raise my eyebrows at him and take a sip of the fishbowl-sized glass of wine.

He sighs. “Please.”

“Close enough.” I walk back to the couch and sit down.

Ryan positions himself across from me by sitting on the coffee table, which groans under his weight, and says, “I’m a werewolf.”

I want to laugh, but the seriousness of his expression makes me realize he might mean it. “That was definitely not on your profile.” Since it’s there, I take a big gulp of wine.

“Nobody thought it had to be. Life Shift was set up to find mates for my pack.”

I shake my head. “This is for real?”

Ryan opens his mouth, growling softly as his jaw begins to grow outward and his canines get longer.

Jerking backward, I gasp. “Jesus! I believe you.” I wave my hand at him. “You can put those fangs away, please.”

He laughs. “You’ll beg for my fangs soon enough.”

I narrow my eyes. “You are so full of yourself.”

“And you’re in denial. We’re true mates, which means we were made for each other.”

“Uh-huh. So now you’re going to carry me off to your den where we’ll mate? Wait.” My heart stops for a moment before fear jumpstarts it again. “Why do werewolves need human women? Am I—are you going to breed me?”

He grins. “Yes.”

I gulp down more of my wine. “Which part?” I ask, hoping it’s the carry-me-off scenario.

“The breeding part.” He gives me a smirk. “Throwing you over my shoulder can happen too.”

“Fat chance.” I jump up to find my phone, my feet thudding across the floor as I run toward the kitchen. Items rattle in my purse while I dig out my phone. “I’m going to call Abby and send you back to the cave you came from.” I bring up my contacts, my fingernails clicking on the screen, and tap my friend’s name.

“Put the phone down.”

I glare at Ryan and notice that his nose is crooked. He’s not that hot. The phone presses hard on my cheek as I wait for Abby to answer.

When she picks up, I say, “I did not sign up for what you sent me. You need to get him out of here. He—did you know these guys plan to breed us?”
