“What?” Abby sounds shocked. “Calm down, Charlie, we?—”

“Calm down? They’re werewolves, Abby! You signed a contract for me to be a baby machine for a—a pack of wolves.”

“No. No, that can’t be right. Werewolves aren’t real.”

“Wanna bet?” I realize how loud I sound and take a moment to find a calmer voice. “Ryan started to morph into one right before my eyes.”

“Into a wolf?" Abby whispers as if she’s the one in peril. “Is he dangerous?”

I glance at Ryan, who has found the remote and is flipping through channels on my TV. I imagine him doing that with a beer in his hand and a large belly hanging over his underwear, while little children— puppies run rampant around the living room. “No. But this deal is definitely off.”

“You’re safe?” she whispers.

“I think so.”

“You’re safe, Charlie,” Ryan says, “But you shouldn’t be telling just anyone about werewolves.”

I stare at him. “You heard her?”

“Werewolf senses.”

“Abby isn’t just anyone,” I say. “She’s the one who arranged all this.”

“And yet she didn’t know?”

I shrug.

“I didn’t know,” Abby says. “I’m so sorry. Hang tight, Charlie. I’ll get him out of there.”

We end the call, and a sadness I can’t explain washes over me. I glance at the man sitting on my couch in just his underwear. Despite my horror that Ryan can turn into a wolf, my stupid heart doesn’t want him to go. “Explain this mate-attraction thing we have.”

Ryan mutes the TV. “I’m serious about you not telling people I’m a werewolf. It’s dangerous to you and to my kind.”

Anger flares up. My emotions are like a yo-yo with this guy. “Don’t you worry, buddy. Your secret is safe with me.” I lift my glass of wine for a gulp, but it’s not cold enough to cool my temper the way I’d hoped. “I won’t be bragging about this blind date to anyone.”

“Are you always this touchy?” Ryan asks. He turns off the TV and tosses the remote, which clatters on the coffee table.

“Are you always such a jerk?”

He sighs. “I wasn’t trying to be. In my world, a woman wants to please her mate.”

I narrow my eyes at him. “Another reason why this match is so wrong.”

“It goes both ways.” When he shrugs, I force my gaze to stay on his eyes instead of watching the flex of his well-formed muscles. “Why do you have so much trouble trusting me?”

I sigh. Maybe I am being too judgmental. “I don’t like the way you think you can make decisions for me.”

Ryan nods and rises from the couch. “You need to be in control.”

“Yes. And for me, this is not negotiable.” It’s possible that like me, Ryan may not have gotten all the information he should have about this situation. “What did they tell you about human women?”

The playful twinkle in Ryan’s eyes returns. “You like sex.” His feet move with purpose as he walks toward me. “You also want to be loved and cared for.”

Once he’s in front of me, I can feel heat radiating from his body and yearn to be wrapped in it. And while I hate that it feels so good to be close to Ryan, I don’t pull back.

He leans in. “You are capable of returning true-mate love with a loyalty that will last a lifetime.”

I begin to tremble with the desire for Ryan to touch me. “How do you do that?”
