I stop dead in my tracks as fear fills me. Turning to face them, Rage starts heading for the door.

“What’s goin’ on with Kasey?” I yell out, stopping everyone else in their tracks.

“She’s been hit and the call got cut or some shit. We know she’s on the highway somewhere but can’t get an exact location. I’m on the phone to get emergency services out to them and Rage is tryin’ to call her back,” my dad says as they race out the door.

Changing direction, I don’t give a fuck about going to work. Kasey has been hurt and that’s where I need to be.

“I’ll let Vikin’ know you won’t be in. I’m gonna have most everyone else come in if they can get coverage for their shift. If not, we’ll close businesses early. Go find your girl and make sure she’s okay,” Venom orders as I exit the clubhouse and jump in my dad’s truck as he starts pulling out of the parking lot.

Slamming the door behind me, I hold on as he drives as fast as possible out of the parking lot and toward the highway. Rage just keeps trying to call Kasey over and over again.

“I’m gonna call Mom and let her know what’s goin’ on,” I say to no one in particular.

Pulling out my phone, I call my mom just so I have something to do. My mind is going crazy with all the possibilities about what condition we’re gonna find Kasey in when we get to her. My mom doesn’t take long to answer the phone.

“What’s going on, Anthony?” she answers, laughter filling her voice.

“Mom, Kasey’s been in an accident. I don’t know what’s goin’ on. She called Rage and he’s tryin’ to call her back right now. He can’t get through. All I know is she’s somewhere on the highway and nothin’ more than that,” I tell her as my voice breaks with emotion.

I’ve wasted so much fucking time with Kasey. Thinking I’m bored and don’t want to be with her anymore. Right now, I have no clue what condition she’s in and I could’ve been at her side. Maybe prevented the accident from happening.

“Are you fucking kidding me right now, Anthony?” my mom asks, her voice filling with fear and panic of her own.

“No, I’m not. I don’t know the details, but I know Kasey was in an accident. Do you know who she was with?” I ask, needing to know how many others are in the SUV with her.

“She’s with her friend Lyric. Lyric’s sister works at Haley’s. She’s one of the waitresses. Do you want me to call her and give her a head’s up about what’s going on?” my mom asks as I look at my dad.

“Mom wants to know if she should call Lyric’s sister? She works at Haley’s and is there right now,” I ask him, not sure what I should do.

“Yeah. We don’t want her sister to hear it from some random source. None of us know the details, but it would be better than hearing it from some random person walking in the diner,” my dad answers as I relay that to my mom.

“Okay. We’ve got the boys and I’ll call the diner. I think Haley’s still there and will know who has a sister named Lyric. At least I hope she will. Let us know what’s going on so we can meet you at the hospital. Unless you don’t want the boys there. Maybe we should take them back to the clubhouse for now so they’re with the other kids,” my mom says, thinking out loud more than questioning me.

“Take them to the clubhouse for now, Mom. We can figure it out once we know what’s goin’ on. You can be with whatever ol’ ladies stay behind with the kids. I don’t see them bringin’ them all right now just to wait in the waitin’ room,” I say, trying to force my mind to think logically when it’s the last thing I want to do.

I get off the phone with my mom and pay attention out the front window of the truck. We’re on the highway and my dad is speeding while weaving around slower moving vehicles. His entire focus is on the road as he follows a cop who’s lights and sirens are filling the air forcing the other vehicles to move out of his way. If he could, I know my dad would be right on the cop’s ass, but he doesn’t want to get a ticket when we’re all trying to get to Kasey as quick as we can.

Panic fills me with every passing mile. My heart is beating out of my chest and I can’t take a deep breath. It feels as if my body is on fire and everywhere tingles. Rage is still frantically trying to call Kasey with no success. With each mile my dad drives, Rage becomes consumed with the rage filling him along with the fear of what’s happening to his daughter. I’m pulled from my thoughts when my dad slams on the brakes and we jerk to a stop. I slam into the back of my dad’s seat because I wasn’t expecting him to slam on the brakes the way he did and since I was lost in my thoughts while watching Rage continue to call Kasey to no avail.

I jump out of the truck and run toward the SUV. It’s resting on its side and I can smell the gas from where I am. Looking at the back of the vehicle, I can see it dripping to the ground and pooling there. We need to get Kasey and her friend out of the SUV before something happens and there’s a fire or explosion. More panic fills me at the thought of that happening when I don’t know what condition Kasey’s currently in.

“You have to stay back. This is an active crime scene and we need to have room for the paramedics to get to the individuals in the vehicle,” an officer tells me, his voice hard and full of authority.

“That’s my fuckin’ woman in there. She’s pregnant and I need to get to her,” I say, trying to move around the cop.

“You’re not getting close to the vehicle, sir. You can follow the ambulance to the hospital. For now, wait behind the line or I’ll have to detain you,” the cop says as another cop car pulls up.

Tony gets out of his car and makes his way over to us.

“What’s goin’ on here?” Tony asks, looking between the officer and me.

“That’s Kasey’s SUV. She’s in there and Rage can’t get her to answer the phone. She called him when the accident happened. My dad is the one who called it in to emergency services. Tony, she’s pregnant and I need to know she’s okay,” I say, my voice breaking as my legs start to give out.

“Give me just a minute, Shield. I’ll find out what’s goin’ on and let you know immediately. For now, stay here and out of the way. That’s the best thing you can do for Kasey right now,” Tony says, his voice not hard or cold as he turns from us and makes his way over to the SUV with the other officer following him.

Rage and my dad step up to my sides as we watch them go to the SUV and look around. More sirens fill the air as fire trucks and ambulances appear on the scene. Everyone rushes around as the three of us stand back and watch the chaos around us. Everything in me is telling me to go to Kasey and make sure she’s okay. That our baby girl is okay and nothing has happened to either one of them. My dad rests his hand on my shoulder to hold me in place as everyone starts to pull Kasey and her friend from the wreckage. From what I can see the SUV is a mangled mess and that doesn’t give me hope at all.

I keep my eyes on the SUV as someone is finally extracted from the side that’s in the air. I can tell by the hair alone that it’s not Kasey. Her friend is loaded on a stretcher and immediately put in an ambulance as it takes off and heads to the nearest hospital. The sound of more sirens and bikes fill the air but I can’t pay attention to what’s going on around me. Kasey is still in the SUV and they should’ve gotten her out first. She’s the one who’s pregnant and needs the help. Rage consumes me as we continue to stand there and wait for them to remove Kasey from the vehicle.
