Page 10 of Braking for Daddy

I had to hold back a chuckle. “I’m okay with diapers. Do you like diapers?”

He scrunched his nose. “No. I’m not like that. I mean, I’m not…Little, I think. I mean, maybe a little bit Little but not a whole lot Little. Just…middle Little. Is that a thing?”

Now I laughed out loud and reached across the table. I opened my palm, inviting him to drop his hand into mine. “It is a thing, and even if it weren’t, it could be your thing. Whatever you do or don’t like is your thing. No labels or justification necessary.”

Max furrowed his brow as he thought on that. “Are you sure? Brayden said I should use a bottle and a pacifier and diapers and suckling.” He pursed his lips together and then leaned forward, attempting to whisper, once again, unsuccessfully. “That part sounds okay, but I’m not a baby. I don’t wanna be a baby. Just…taken care of. What’s that called?”

Well, shit, this boy was gonna kill me. I pulled his hand up to my lips and dropped a kiss on the inside of his wrist. “As far as I’m concerned, it’s called being the perfect boy.”

His jaw slowly dropped open as if I had said the most shocking thing to him. “It is? You would like that? You…would like…me?”

I smiled, but that wasn’t a moment to laugh. Max was being serious and vulnerable, and I wanted him to know that I was too. “Absolutely, Max. So far, I like you very much. Although, I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to drink this much on a regular basis.” I raised an eyebrow and nodded toward the empty bottle.

He gave me a guilty grin. “I never do, and I’ll probably regret this tomorrow.”

I nodded and took a deep breath. “Well, I can promise that I will definitely not regret anything about tonight. When I saw you at Primal, I wanted to get to know you. And so far, I like you even more every time we talk.” I gave his hand a squeeze, and his eyes fluttered shut as if he were absorbing my words through his entire body.

“So, you’ll tell me what to do?”

Where did that come from? “What do you mean, sunshine?”

“Brayden said most Daddies are bossy and tell their boys what to do and help them and stuff. Is that like you?”

My instinct was to tell him that we could slowly ease into whatever dynamic felt right for us, but something told me that wasn’t what he needed to hear. After a moment, I merely nodded. We’d need to have this conversation again anyways because there was a very high likelihood he wouldn’t remember any of it tomorrow. “Well, I would like to be in charge of many aspects of your life, but we’ll establish boundaries, and you can decide if there are any areas you don’t want me to interfere with. Like, your job or your family…”

Max immediately shook his head. “No, you can have it all. My brain works too fast, and I either forget or I get overwhelmed. That’s half of the best part of why I want a Daddy.”

I held in another smile. He was making sense, but he was also just childlike enough to make me wanna pull him onto my lap right there in the middle of the restaurant. “And what’s the other half of the best part?”

Max’s eyes got big, and his cheeks were immediately pink. “I can’t say that here because people might hear me.” He looked around at the small groups of diners sitting near us. “It’s private.”

“Okay.” This was getting interesting. And he was right that his inside voice was not exactly subtle…or appropriate for a private conversation.

Max pushed his cake away after just a few bites, so I pulled my card out of my pocket and held it up to the server when he passed by. The man discreetly took my card, and just a minute later, he brought back my receipt to sign.

“Are you ready to head home, sunshine?”

He nodded and scooted his chair back. “I like it when you call me that.”

“You do?” I stood up beside him and held out my hand to help him stand up. I had a feeling he would be a little wobbly on the way to my truck so I kept my grip on him.

“Because I’m wearing a yellow shirt?” Max leaned heavily on my side as we slowly made our way through the restaurant.

I could feel some judging eyes following us, and I did feel a twinge of guilt for letting him drink more than he should have. But I knew I wasn’t going to take advantage of him, so I didn’t let other people’s thoughts bother me. “Well, you do look like a ray of sunshine in that color, but you also just seem so…happy when I see you. It was the first word that came to mind when I saw you giggling with Brayden and the other boys.”

His head landed on my shoulder, and he sighed. “That’s because I am happy when I see you. I wanted you to come back the other night, but you never did, so I went home.”

Right. We still hadn’t talked about that. In the middle of the parking lot, I stopped and pulled him fully against my chest, wrapping my arms around him and holding him tightly. “I’m so sorry that guy was harassing you. He’s been banned from Primal and added to the watchlist that all the kink clubs in the country subscribe to. Hopefully, you’ll never have to see him again.”

Clutching the front of my shirt, Max rested his forehead against mine and breathed against my mouth. “I probably won’t. I don’t think I’ll go back to Primal unless…” He tucked his chin even closer to his chest so there was no way he could see my expression when he said, “Well, unless my Daddy takes me.”

A flood of warmth ran through me because it seemed clear as day that he wanted me to be his Daddy. But I didn’t respond with words. I felt like I was right on the edge of taking advantage of him in his intoxicated state, and that wasn’t fair to Max.

Instead, I dropped a soft kiss to the top of his head and gave him a squeeze before we started walking again. “Let’s get you home. You need some water and aspirin before you fall asleep.”

Max let me guide him to my truck and help him get settled inside. This time, he didn’t even reach for his seatbelt. He just tucked his hands under his thighs and straightened his back, leaving plenty of room for me to reach across his body and buckle him in.

By the time I rounded the front of my truck and got myself inside, Max’s eyes were closed and he was leaning against the window, dozing off.
