“I don’t think it was,” he said.

“Drop it, Boone,” she said. Anger mixed with her anxiety.

“Little lamb, tell me who it is,” he said.

Her lips trembling, she stared silently at him.

He cupped her face and made his voice stern. “Hedra, tell me. Right now.”

It was a mistake. Her anxiety disappeared, and she scowled at him before pulling away. “You’re my employer, not my boyfriend. I don’t have to tell you shit.”

“I’m trying to help you,” he said.

“I don’t need your help.” She snatched her phone from him and stomped toward the doorway, snagging her jacket from the back of the chair.

“Where are you going?”

“I’m off the clock,” she said. “It’s none of your damn business where I’m going, Boone Jameson.”

CHAPTER 10

We need to find her. Stop sitting on your ass! Our mate is in danger.

Boone rubbed his aching forehead. Christ, if his tiger didn’t shut the fuck up, he’d lose his fucking mind.

She needs our protection, his tiger snarled.

She doesn’t want it, Boone snapped. Christ, give it a rest, would you?

His tiger was quiet for approximately 4.2 seconds before starting again.

Our mate is in trouble. We need to find her.

He stood up, smiling distractedly at his nan. “Be right back, Nan.”

He left the living room and went to his bedroom. He shut the door and paced back and forth, staring at the numerous texts he’d sent Hedra over the last three hours. She hadn’t replied to a single one or answered both times he called. Fuck. She’d probably blocked his damn number.

He sucked in a deep breath, his tiger’s incessant talking ceasing when Boone pressed Grayson’s number. His stomach churning, he stared out the window at the darkness as he listened to the phone ring in his ear.

“Hey, Boone,” Grayson said.

“Hey. Are you busy?”

“No,” he said. “Why?”

“Do you think you could come by and stay with Nan for a while?”

“Sure. What’s wrong?” Grayson said.

“Nothing,” Boone said before sighing. “Fuck. Everything.”

“Does this have something to do with Hedra?” Grayson asked.

Boone gripped his phone. “Is Hedra there?”

“No. She’s at Shay’s place.”

“How do you know that?” Boone asked.
