“No fair,” Nan said. “You have faster reflexes than Alfie.”

“Alfie, drop it,” Boone said.

Alfie bared his teeth at him, Hedra’s bra still clamped between them.

“Alfie,” Boone said and growled at him again. Alfie stared defiantly at him, and Boone let his fangs drop and bared them at him before growling a third time.

Alfie spit the bra strap out, and Boone plucked the bra off his head, handing it to Hedra.

“Thank you,” she said. Boone studied the bra, trying like hell not to picture how it would look on Hedra before trying even harder not to imagine how it would look as he peeled it away from her gorgeous breasts. He cleared his throat and set Alfie on the floor as Hedra left the kitchen.

“I can smell your lust for the human, Boone,” Nan said.

He didn’t reply, and she sighed loudly. “I’m going to end up with a human great-grandchild. I just know it.”

Hedra returned, and she glared at Alfie. “I’ve shut my door, so don’t even try to get back into my room, Alfie.”

He bared his teeth at her, and Hedra did her imitation of a cheetah growl. Alfie jumped back before crossing the kitchen to his bed in the corner. He climbed in, resting his head on his paws and staring at them as Boone seasoned the steaks.

“You’re still okay with me meeting Wes and the others for drinks tonight?” Boone asked Hedra.

“Of course,” she said.

“I won’t be long,” he said. “I appreciate you hanging out with Nan.”

“Happy to,” she said. “Even if Althea makes me watch that Shifters in Love reality show.”

“I’m going to bed early tonight,” Nan said, “so don’t expect me to amuse you, human.”

“Are you feeling okay?” Boone studied his nan, worry gnawing at his belly.

“I’m fine.” She brushed off his concern. “Jerry and I went for a walk with Michael after breakfast, and my hip is a little sore, and I’m tired, is all. Don’t look at me like that, Boone. I’m eighty-four years old and recovering from hip surgery. Sometimes, I need more rest than usual.”

“I just don’t want you overdoing it,” Boone said.

“I’m not,” she said.

“I can stick around and help you into bed,” Boone said.

Nan frowned. “I’m not going to bed that early, Boone. Besides, the human will help me. Right?”

“I can,” Hedra said.

“What are your plans for tonight?” Boone asked.

“Well, since Althea has declined to spend the evening with me, I’m reading a good book in a hot bath,” Hedra said.

Nan snorted in annoyance. “Great, I’ll never sleep. You hum while you’re in the tub, human, and it’s very loud, and the light keeps me awake.”

“It’s not that bad. I shut the door,” Hedra said.

“It bugs me,” Nan said moodily.

“You can use my tub,” Boone said to Hedra.

Her eyes widened, and a grin crossed her face. “Seriously? You wouldn’t mind?”

“No,” he said. “You can use it whenever you want.”
