“A lion hopped up on drugs,” Chase said. “It wasn’t a fair fight.”
“You’re my new favourite,” Boone groaned as he rubbed at the giant goose egg on the back of his skull. “Did we win?”
“Yeah,” Cooper said as he stared at the bodies lying on the ground.
“Great. Fuck, I could use a beer. Maybe a burger too. You wanna get burgers and beers?” Boone said.
“Sure,” Cooper said. “Wes, Eleanor… you guys okay?”
Eleanor nodded as Wes cupped her face. “Are you hurt, my mate?”
“You drove,” she said.
“What?” Wes stared at her in confusion.
“You drove a car here,” she said. “Without having a panic attack.”
“I did. My mate needed me,” he said.
Warmth rushed over her, and she smiled at him. “Promise me you’ll still let me drive you to work at least twice a week.”
“I promise,” he said with a small smile. He hugged her hard, and she buried her face in his neck, blinking back the tears as he purred to her. “I love you, Eleanor.”
“I love you too,” she said.
He helped her to her feet, slipping an arm around her waist to steady her. “Are you sure you’re not hurt?”
“Positive,” she said. “Hey, Wes?”
“Yeah?”
“I stabbed Rourke in the eye with my pocketknife.”
“I know,” he said.
“That was badass, right?”
“Very,” he said.
“Is this where you apologize to me for saying my knife wouldn’t cut through bread?” Eleanor said.
Wes burst into laughter before pulling her into his embrace and hugging her hard. “Thank you for saving my life, my mate.”
“You’re welcome, my mate.”

“What did Cooper say?” Eleanor glanced at Wes, shielding her eyes from the sun as he dropped into the chair next to hers.
Wes took a sip of beer. “The Council has cleared us of any wrongdoing.”
“Finally,” Eleanor said. “The police cleared you a week and a half ago.”
Wes shrugged. “The Council likes to be thorough. The fact that it was both humans and shifters who died made it even messier.”
“It was all self-defense,” Eleanor said.
“It was, and after doing their investigation, the Council agreed with local authorities and ruled it as such.”
