“No, I don’t think so.” Wes slammed his fist against his thigh. “I don’t know for sure. They won’t tell me a fucking thing. She’s all alone, and she’s in pain, and she… she’s alone.”

“Okay, let me try,” Daisy said. “Maybe they’ll give me some information.”

She headed toward the nurses’ station as Cooper said, “Tell us what happened.”

Wes ran through the events quickly, his voice doing that weird cracking thing again when he got to the part where he turned and saw the blood flowing down Eleanor’s arm.

“Holy shit,” Boone said.

“What?” Cooper asked.

Boone pointed to where Daisy was being allowed past the security door leading into the emergency room. The door closed behind her, and Cooper grinned. “That’s my girl.”

He turned to Wes. “Daisy’s with Eleanor now. She’s not alone, okay? Tell your lion to chill.”

Wes nodded. He still wished it was him with Eleanor, but at least his lion might settle the fuck down now.

“Did you get a good look at the guy?” Cooper said.

“Not great. He wore sunglasses, and my lion was pretty fucking angry. I could probably pick him out of a line up though.” Wes hit his thigh again. “I can’t believe I let him get away. Fuck, I’m an idiot. But my lion saw the blood on Eleanor, and he… he didn’t care about the guy anymore, and he was in control enough that I couldn’t stop him from going to Eleanor.”

“It’s all right,” Boone said. “You saved Eleanor’s life. You did good, buddy.”

“No, I fucked up,” Wes said. “I fucked up, and now Eleanor is still in danger.”

His lion was riled up again and pushing for control. Cooper squeezed his shoulder. “Hey, it’s okay. Just relax. We’ll keep Eleanor safe. It’s what we do, right?”

“Yeah,” Wes said. “She won’t be able to afford it, but I’ll cover the cost for security.”

Cooper shrugged. “We’ll worry about that later. Any idea why this guy went after Eleanor?”

“No,” Wes said.

“Maybe a carjacking gone bad?” Boone said.

“Maybe,” Wes said.

“But it doesn’t feel that way to you,” Cooper said.

“No, it doesn’t. I know that’s stupid, but…”

“It isn’t. What are you always telling us? Trust our instincts,” Boone said.

“Yeah, you’re right. I just think that -”

His lion roared with happiness when he caught Eleanor’s scent. Wes looked past Cooper’s wide body, relief coursing through him when Eleanor and Daisy walked out of the emergency room.

He ran across the waiting area, stopping in front of Eleanor and scanning her face anxiously. “How do you feel?”

“Okay,” she said as she touched the bandage that covered her upper arm. “It’s just a scratch.”

Daisy frowned. “It’s more than just a scratch, Eleanor.”

Cooper and Boone joined them. Cooper took Daisy’s hand. “How did you get past the nurse, my mate?”

Daisy lowered her voice. “I told her I was Eleanor’s sister.”

Cooper grinned and pressed a kiss against her mouth. “Very clever, little mate.”
