“Hey, I’m Boone,” Boone said to Eleanor. “I work with Wes and Cooper.”

“Hi, Boone,” Eleanor said. She smiled at him, but Wes could smell her weariness.

“Cooper, I told Eleanor we’d give her a ride to the pharmacy to pick up her antibiotics and pain meds and then a ride home,” Daisy said.

“Of course,” Cooper said. He gave Eleanor a small smile. “How many stitches did you need?”

“Only ten. I got lucky. The bullet only grazed my arm,” Eleanor said, but she didn’t look like she felt lucky.

Wes could barely stop himself from putting his arms around Eleanor. Ignoring his lion’s demands to do just that, he shoved his hands into his pockets and said, “Why was the guy in your car, Eleanor?”

She swallowed hard. “He was looking for the package my dad sent to me.”

“Your dad sent you a package?” Wes said.

“Yeah. I picked it up last night from the post office. It’s still in the trunk of my car. I was going to open it tonight, but then… you know.”

Wes nodded. “Okay. We should get Eleanor home.”

“I’m gonna head back upstairs. Call me if you need me.” Boone clapped Wes on the back and headed toward the elevator.

His lion growled at him to take Eleanor’s hand. Wes kept his hands shoved firmly in his pockets and headed toward the exit with the others.

CHAPTER 5

“Thank you for the ride home,” Eleanor said. She unbuckled her seatbelt, staring at Cooper and Wes in confusion when they unbuckled their seat belts as well. “Um, what’s happening?”

“Give me your house keys, Eleanor,” Wes said.

“What? Why?”

“Cooper and I will check your house while you stay in the car with Daisy,” Wes said.

“I’m sure it’s fine,” she said. “The guy probably doesn’t know where I live.”

That was one enormous lie, and she hoped like fuck they couldn’t see it on her face. The guy knew where she lived, had been in her damn house. As soon as Wes and the others left, Eleanor was grabbing the baseball bat from her closet and shoving chairs under the doorknobs of both doors.

Eleanor, that’s not good enough. Wes works for a security company. He can help you. Protect you.

Yeah, well, as appealing as the idea was to hire Wes as her private bodyguard, she didn’t have that kind of money. She barely had money to stay in a cheap motel, not unless she wanted to go without groceries for a few days. A baseball bat would have to do.

“Eleanor?” Cooper stared at her in the rear-view mirror.

“Uh, sorry. What?”

“I said how do you know?” Cooper said.

“Well, I… I mean, I guess I don’t,” Eleanor said.

“Exactly. So, stay in the car while we take a quick look around.” Wes held out his hand for her keys.

“I think this is a little overkill, but okay.” Eleanor dug around in her bag to find her keys. A paramedic had returned the Mace to her bag before leaving for the hospital, and she dropped it on the seat next to her. “I tried to use this, but I couldn’t get the lid off of it.”

Eleanor! Could you try any harder to let Wes know how stupid you are?

“It’s okay,” Wes said.

She handed over her keys. “It’s the silver one.”
