She’d run out of breath and anger. Exhausted and feeling sick over her outburst, she said, “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have yelled. But it’s been a long day, and I’m tired. I need some sleep.”

Daisy stood when she did and said, “I’ll show you to the guest room.”

“Thanks, Daisy.”

Eleanor paused in the doorway of the kitchen when Wes said, “You can’t go to Emerton on your own tomorrow. Promise me, Eleanor.”

“Yeah, I know,” Eleanor said. “Thank you again for saving my life, Wes.”

CHAPTER 6

“Thanks for the ride back to my car, Cooper,” Eleanor said.

“Don’t mention it,” Cooper said.

“Are you sure you slept okay last night, Eleanor?” Daisy twisted in her seat to stare at her.

“I look that bad, huh?” Eleanor said.

“No,” Daisy said.

“Your mate can’t lie worth crap,” Eleanor said to Cooper.

Cooper grinned at Daisy, who poked him in the thigh. “Don’t agree with her. I’m good at lying.”

“No, my mate, you are not,” Cooper said with another grin.

“You just look a little tired and worried,” Daisy said. “Which is understandable.”

“I’m okay,” Eleanor said as Cooper turned onto Wes’s street.

“What’s your favourite food?” Daisy said. “I can make it tonight for supper.”

“Oh, um, can I get back to you on that?” Eleanor said. “I don’t have much of an appetite right now.”

She sounded guilty as hell, but, man, she was just as bad at lying as Daisy. She hated lying to Daisy, but she couldn’t tell her that last night after she was alone in the guest room, she’d cancelled all of her clients for the next two days, mapped out the bus stations closest to her father’s house, and booked herself a motel room. The minute she dropped Wes off at work, she was driving the eight hours to Emerton. She’d text Daisy once she got there and let her know she was safe but wouldn’t be staying with her and Cooper tonight.

Cooper stopped in front of Wes’s house, and Eleanor muttered a curse. Her car was gone.

“Somebody stole my damn car,” she said.

She wanted to cry.

She wanted to scream.

She wanted to kick something.

She settled for saying ‘fuck, fuck, fuck’ under her breath.

“It’s not stolen,” Cooper said. “My friend Abe owns an auto repair place. I texted him last night and he agreed to come in early to the shop to fix your window, so you wouldn’t have to cancel your clients today. I asked Grayson to drive your car over to the shop this morning. Abe said it would only take an hour, so Gray should be back any – oh, there he is.”

Grayson parked in front of Cooper’s truck, shutting off the engine and climbing out as Eleanor stared at Cooper. She felt decidedly weepy, and she cleared her throat and blinked hard to hold back the tears. “Cooper, thank you so much. That was incredibly kind and thoughtful of you.”

“You’re welcome,” he said.

“Wait, how did you get my keys?” she said.

“I took them out of your purse earlier this morning when Gray stopped at the house,” Cooper said. He paused, “I just grabbed the keys, I didn’t, like, snoop around in your purse or anything.”
