She laughed. “Coop, you could have stolen all the contents and worn my purse like a hat if you wanted. You just saved me so much time.”

“No big deal,” he said.

Eleanor didn’t know how to explain to him that, yes, it was a very big deal. Used to taking care of everything herself, to have Wes, and now his friends too, helping her was an unexpected and wonderful gift.

“How much do I owe you?” she asked.

He just shrugged. “I don’t know. We’ll settle later. Have a good day at work, Eleanor. We’ll see you tonight.”

He stared steadily at her in the rear-view mirror. If Eleanor didn’t know better, she’d swear he knew what she was planning.

“Great, thank you again. See you tonight.” She hopped out of the back seat of Cooper’s truck, tossed her bag over her shoulder, and slammed the door shut before he or Daisy could say anything else.

She walked over to Grayson and held out her hand. “Hi, I’m Eleanor.”

“Nice to meet you, Eleanor. I’m Grayson.” He shook her hand.

“Thank you so much for helping with my car. I really appreciate it.”

“No problem. Any friend of Wes’s, as the saying goes.” He smiled at her before standing next to Cooper’s window. “Hey, Coop. I have an errand to run before I come to the office. I’ll be back in time for our ten o’clock meeting.”

“Sounds good. Thanks again for your help this morning,” Coop said.

Grayson nodded and waved to Wes as Wes stepped out of his house. He climbed into a silver SUV parked across the street and drove away with a final wave to Cooper.

She stuck her bag in the trunk of her car, as Wes walked toward her. “Hold up, Eleanor.”

She paused in shutting the trunk, watching as Wes tossed in a leather overnight bag next to hers before nodding to Cooper.

“Hey, Wes,” Cooper said.

“Hey. Thanks again for the ride home last night.”

“Don’t mention it. See you later.”

“Oh hey, since Cooper is right here, why don’t you drive with him?” Eleanor said. “It’ll save you some money, right?”

“I booked you for this morning,” Wes said.

“Right, yeah, I know, but I mean… I’m cool with you cancelling this morning. I get it. It’s silly for me to drive you to work when Cooper’s right here and going to the office.”

She didn’t relish losing the only income she’d make for the day, but if Wes went with Cooper, she might be able to beat the morning rush hour traffic getting out of the city.

“No, thank you.” Wes opened the back door of her car and climbed in, shutting the door behind him.

“No… thank you?” Eleanor echoed.

Cooper laughed. “See you, Eleanor.”

He drove off, and Eleanor closed the trunk and slid into the driver’s seat. She shut the door and waited for a minute or so. Yesterday, she’d sat in this seat while a man held a gun to her head. She thought maybe she’d feel different, that maybe the car wouldn’t give her the sense of comfort it always did, but she felt okay. Felt… normal.

“You okay?” Wes said.

“Yeah,” she said. “I am.”

“Good. How’s your arm?”

“It’s all right. Sorer than I thought, but the pain meds have made a difference,” she said.
