“Did you take your antibiotics this morning?”

The concern in Wes’s voice brought on a wave of emotion. Since her mother died, she hadn’t had anyone who was concerned about her. It was kind of nice to have someone worrying about her again.

“Yep, I did.” She started the car and buckled her seat belt. As she pulled out onto the street, she said, “So, what’s with the overnight bag? You going out of town?”

“You should take the Henderson freeway,” Wes said.

She frowned. “That’ll take me twice as long to get to your office.”

“But it’ll get us out of the city before rush hour traffic gets terrible.”

She immediately pulled over and put the car into park before twisting to face him, the seatbelt digging into her neck. “What the hell, Wes?”

He stared calmly at her. “I’m going with you to Emerton.”

“I’m not going to Emerton.”

He didn’t reply, and she scowled at him before slamming her hand down on the steering wheel. “How did you know?”

“You can’t lie worth shit, Eleanor. I knew last night you were going to go. Even after you promised me.”

“I never promised,” she said. “And I’m an excellent liar.”

He snorted. “No, you are not. And even if you were, as soon as Cooper texted me and said you had your overnight bag with you this morning, it was a clear sign you weren’t planning on staying at his place tonight.”

She opened her mouth, paused, and then said, “Fuck, this spy shit is a lot harder than the movies make it out to be.”

“This is not some movie spy shit,” Wes said. “This is dangerous and reckless, and you thinking it’s like a movie is exactly why I’m going with you.”

“I don’t need your help,” she said. “I’m driving you to work, Wes.”

“Are you going to drag me out of your car?” he said. “Because that’s the only way I’m leaving this vehicle.”

“I’ll call the police and have you arrested,” she said.

He grinned, and his pupils turned to slits as he talked to his lion. “I know,” he murmured, “she’s stubborn.”

“I’m not stubborn,” she said when his pupils went back to normal. “You can tell your annoying lion that.” She leaned a little further over the seat when he didn't say anything and yelled at Wes’s face. “I’m not stubborn, lion!”

Wes laughed, and, just like the first time she heard his laugh, she was both delighted, and a little turned on by the sound of it.

“You don’t have to yell,” Wes said. “He has excellent hearing.”

“Wes,” she said, her voice turning serious, “I don’t want to put you in danger, okay? Yesterday, I almost got you killed and -”

Her voice cut out when Wes leaned forward and cupped her face. His thumb stroked her cheek, and goosebumps rose on her skin when he purred to her and then said, “Eleanor, you don’t have to worry about me. Ever. I am more than capable of taking care of myself. Do you understand?”

She nodded, her throat too dry to speak. When Wes’s gaze dropped to her mouth, she parted her lips, hoping against hope that he would kiss her. She missed his taste, his tongue, his touch.

His nostrils flared, and she almost moaned with disappointment when he dropped his hand, his purring cut out, and he shoved back into his seat until he was as far from her as possible.

“Drive, Eleanor,” he said hoarsely.

“Wes,” she said, “I don’t…”

“I’m going with you,” he said. “End of discussion.”

She turned around, catching with the edge of her vision the way Wes immediately adjusted the prominent bulge in his jeans. A perverse pleasure went through her. At least she wasn’t the only one turned on as fuck right now.
