“It works to our advantage,” Chad said.

“Does it? He shows no remorse over the people he’s killed,” Hoyt said. “Hell, none of them do, but he fucking enjoyed it, Chad.”

“They completed their mission. There’s nothing wrong with them being happy about that.”

“Innocent people died on their mission,” Hoyt said. “At their hand. That wasn’t supposed to happen.”

“Mistakes were made, but we tweaked the juice to lower the aggression.”

“It didn’t work, and you know it. They’re dangerous, Chad. You think you can control them, but you can’t. The whole program needs to be scrapped.”

“You losing your fucking nerve, Hoyt?” Chad said. “You thinking about rabbiting like Whitman?”

“You know I’m fucking not,” Hoyt said.

“Good.” He returned to his chair and opened his laptop. “Put a man on Eleanor. Once she has the parcel from her father, he goes in and takes it from her.”

“You want her left alive or cleaned?” Hoyt said.

Chad didn’t hesitate. “Cleaned.”

CHAPTER 2

“You don’t need to be nervous. You’ve done this hundreds of times. Hell, maybe even thousands of times. Nothing has changed,” Eleanor said to the Eleanor in the rear-view mirror.

Rear-view Eleanor’s face didn’t believe a word she said.

Eleanor couldn’t blame her. No matter how many pep talks she’d given herself on the drive over to Wes’s office, it didn’t negate the fact that, while yes, driving Wes home from work was a completely normal occurrence, this time it was far from normal.

Last week she’d kissed Wes.

Kissed the man who’d had a leading role in every single one of her sex fantasies for the last year. And not only had he kissed her back, but he’d said things to her. Dirty things that he certainly didn’t say in her fantasies. But to be fair, despite seeing her twice a day, nearly every day for over a year, Wes barely spoke to her in real life. The lion shifter was the quietest man she’d ever met. Why would she suspect he indulged in dirty talk with the women he had sex with?

“Whoa, take it down a notch, Eleanor,” Rear-view Eleanor said to her. “You kissed, and he mentioned your lady parts were greedy for his dick. That’s not even close to having sex with him.”

“My lady parts are greedy for his dick,” Eleanor said. “Ridiculously greedy. And now that I know what a great kisser he is and how good he is at the dirty talk, I haven’t had a dry pair of underpants since.”

Rear-view Eleanor had nothing to say on the subject of damp underpants.

Eleanor slumped in her seat, staring at the steering wheel. She was losing it, right? It was the only explanation for why she just had a five-minute conversation with herself.

The car door opened, and she sat up straight as Wes slid into the back seat. He nodded to her, buckled his seat belt, and stared out the passenger window.

Like he always did.

As if he hadn’t had his tongue down her throat.

As if he hadn’t said he’d give her his cock as soon as she showed him her pretty tits.

As if she hadn’t felt his erection against her pussy.

Great, there went her underpants again.

She cleared her throat. “Hey, Wes.”

“Hello, Eleanor.” He glanced at her, and the hope in her chest died a sudden and violent death. Wes looked at her the way he always did. Polite disinterest and nothing more. As if that moment on Thursday night had never happened between them.

She waited for a beat, her hands clenched tight around the steering wheel, her heart fluttering around her chest like a trapped hummingbird, but Wes didn’t say anything. Not even when the silence became awkward.
