The dirty part of his mind, which frankly made up about ninety percent, immediately set to wondering just what he could do to Hedra to make her scream his name in bed. He’d start with pussy eating and go from there, he decided. He bet she tasted delicious. He bet she –

He forced his head back into the game. Despite what Hedra said, he doubted she’d last even a day with his grandmother, and besides, sleeping with the woman he hired to look after Nan would be a huge mistake.

His tiger growled in disagreement. Boone stood and said, “Okay, ready to meet Nan?”

“I’m girding my loins as we speak,” Hedra said.

Boone laughed but paused in the doorway. Hedra stared expectantly at him, and when he didn’t move, she said, “What’s wrong?”

“I feel like I’m leading the lamb to the slaughter,” he said.

She laughed. “I’m a lot tougher than I look.”

At his look of disbelief, she laughed again and said, “If my family could hear you calling me a lamb, they’d die laughing. Once you get to know me, you won’t ever think of me as a lamb again, I promise.”

Leaving her purse in the kitchen, Hedra followed him down the hall toward Nan’s bedroom. Boone glanced back at her. “You’re not allergic to dogs, are you? Nan has a miniature poodle. They’re supposed to be hypo-allergenic, but I’m not sure that isn’t just a bunch of bullshit.”

“Not allergic, and I love dogs,” she said. “Although poodles are my second least favourite dog breed.”

“What’s your first least favourite?” he said.

“Schnauzer.”

“Why?” he said.

“They look like the type of guy who would shiv you for a pack of cigarettes from the prison canteen.”

He laughed again before knocking on his nan’s half-open door. “Nan? I have someone I want you to meet.”

He pushed the door open and stepped into the room. His stomach churned and sweat dampened the back of his shirt. If Hedra took offense to his nan and refused to be her nurse, he was well on his way to being totally fucked.

Saying a silent prayer that his grandmother would just once be nice, he said, “Nan, this is Hedra Miller. Hedra, this is my grandmother Althea Jameson.”

“Hello, Mrs. Jameson. It’s nice to meet you.” Hedra walked fearlessly to the bed and held out her hand.

His grandmother sniffed deeply. “You’re human. I don’t like humans.”

“So I’ve heard,” Hedra said.

Nan studied Hedra’s hair and the piercing in her nose before peering around her at Boone. “She’d better not be my new nurse.”

“Worse,” Hedra said. “I’m his new girlfriend.”

Boone’s mouth dropped open as a startled growl escaped his grandmother’s mouth. She stared wide-eyed at Hedra as Alfie, who was lying next to his grandmother on the bed, stood and cocked his head.

“Just kidding,” Hedra said. “I’m not dating your grandson, but I am your new nurse.”

“You’re not boning my grandson?” Nan said.

“Nan!” Boone could feel the blush rising up his neck.

“Nope,” Hedra said. “This is currently a boning free zone.” She waved her hand back and forth in a half-circle in front of herself.

“Thank God,” Nan muttered.

“See?” Hedra said. “Compared to the alternative of me boning your grandson on the regular, me being your nurse isn’t that bad after all, is it?”

“I don’t like humans,” Nan repeated.
