“I heard you the first time,” Hedra said with a cheerful grin.

Alfie stalked toward her in that stiff-legged way dogs had when they were getting ready to bite or tell you off. He sniffed in Hedra’s direction, and a low growl drifted from his throat. Boone groaned inwardly. The little shit was about to start barking his head off and wouldn’t stop until he’d driven Hedra from the room.

Boone jerked when Hedra stared at Alfie and did a remarkably accurate imitation of a cheetah’s growl. Alfie froze in place, staring uncertainly at Hedra. She growled again and bared her teeth at the poodle. He whimpered and scampered back to the safety of Nan, huddling against her side and staring silently at Hedra.

“Alfie thinks you smell,” Nan said. “I think you smell too.”

“You don’t smell that great yourself, sweetheart,” Hedra said with a grin.

His grandmother bristled, glaring at Hedra before growling. “Well, you can hardly expect me to ask my grandson to help me shower. And I certainly wasn’t letting the nurses at the hospital help me. They went through my things while I showered.”

“They didn’t go through your stuff, Nan,” Boone said.

“I could smell their gross human scent on my phone and my purse, Boone,” Nan said.

“Well, let’s get you in the shower now,” Hedra said.

To Boone’s complete shock, his grandmother sniffed and said, “Fine. But only because I have a birthday party to attend this evening and I’d like to look and smell my best.”

She peered around Hedra. “You may leave, Boone.”

Boone hesitated, and his grandmother rolled her eyes. “For heaven’s sake, Boone, I’m not going to attack the girl in the shower. Go on back to the kitchen.”

Boone glanced at Hedra, who smiled cheerfully. “We’re good.”

A glimmer of hope rising in his chest, Boone left the bedroom.

CHAPTER 12

“Oh my God, Wes, I’m sorry. I can’t believe I slept so long.” Eleanor plopped down into a kitchen chair and smoothed her damp hair self-consciously. She’d remembered to bring toiletries but not her blow dryer, and she wasn’t exactly rocking the soaked rat look.

“It was a long day yesterday, and you needed your rest. Besides, it’s not that late.” Wes closed the dishwasher door.

“It’s twelve-thirty,” Eleanor said. “The shower in your guest bathroom is amazing, by the way. I think I tried every setting on the showerhead.”

“Do you drink coffee?” Wes said.

“I am an enormous fan of the bitter bean juice,” Eleanor said.

Wes laughed and grabbed a mug from the cupboard. “Do you take sugar and milk?”

“Just sugar, thank you.”

Wes popped the coffee pod into the machine and set the sugar on the table. “You good with sandwiches for lunch?”

“Yes, but you don’t have to feed me or make me meals,” Eleanor said as she took her phone out of her pocket.

The coffee finished brewing, and he placed it in front of her. “I want to. Did you cancel your clients for the weekend?”

“Just trying to do it now, but my phone is being weird.” Her annoyance over her phone wasn’t enough to dim her rush of lust when Wes leaned over her to stare at her phone screen. God, did he smell good.

Wes stiffened and then made a weird sound that was half trill and half purr. His eyes turned golden, and the pupils narrowed to slits. He smiled at her, and the sight of his fangs brought a weird twinge of pleasure to her pussy.

“Hello, sweet human,” Wes’s voice was deeper, and a bit gargled. She swallowed hard when he purred to her.

“Um, hi,” she said.

“Pretty little human,” Wes said in that thick voice before burying his face in her damp hair and inhaling.
