Wes swallowed down both his growl and his urge to show Chase what Wes could do to impudent little shits like him. He needed to chill the fuck out. Chase was a good guy and perfectly capable of keeping Eleanor safe.

What if he mates with her? His lion was close to losing his shit again.

He won’t. Eleanor isn’t attracted to him.

If his scent is on her, I’ll rip out his throat.

Wes ignored his lion’s threat. The best thing he could do was pretend like he didn’t care if Eleanor mated with Chase. His apathy might help calm his lion. Of course, he needed to actually not care and right now, just the thought of Chase touching Eleanor made him want to punch a hole in the wall.

“Alanna needs you from two to seven, which means you’ll be an hour late for your own party, but that’s okay. We’ll keep it low-key until you arrive,” Cooper said.

“We should cancel the party,” Wes said. “It’s not a good time.”

“We’re celebrating your birthday this year, no arguing,” Cooper said.

“What?” Eleanor sat up straight, staring at Wes. “It’s your birthday today?”

“Tomorrow,” Wes said. “But it’s better to cancel the party. We can celebrate next year.”

Cooper reached out and squeezed his shoulder. “No, we’re not cancelling. It’s been four years. You deserve to have your day celebrated. I understand why you don’t want to, but I think it’s important for you. For all of us.”

He could smell both Eleanor and Chase’s confusion as he stared at Cooper. “It doesn’t feel right without him.”

“I know.” Cooper squeezed his shoulder again. “But he’d be pissed at the way we act like your birthday doesn’t exist.” He cleared his throat. “Lusa will pick you up from Alanna’s and drive you over to my place.”

“I can drop Wes off and pick him up after the party,” Eleanor said. “I don’t mind.”

Cooper frowned. “You’re going to the party too, Eleanor. You and Chase can come by around six.”

A flush covered her cheeks. “I can’t go to Wes’s party just because…”

“Just because what?” Wes said.

“Just because everyone who’s babysitting me is going to be there,” Eleanor said.

“I want you to come,” Wes said.

She studied him, the flush deepening. “You’re only saying that because you have no choice but to invite me.”

“No, I’m not,” Wes said. “I want you at the party, and you’re going. End of discussion.”

She rolled her eyes, but he could smell her happiness, and it made his lion purr contently.

“Perfect. Wes, I’ll drop you off at Alanna’s place on my way back to the office,” Cooper said.

Eleanor stood, and Wes took her hand before she could leave. “Be careful, Eleanor. Stay close to Chase, and don’t leave the house by yourself. All right?”

“All right,” Eleanor said. “I’ll be safe. I promise.”

She squeezed his hand before following Chase out of the kitchen. Wes watched her leave, his lion growling his displeasure at Eleanor being out of their sight.

CHAPTER 13

“Wait, so you don’t work for Shadow Security?” Hedra took a sip of her drink. Boone’s grandmother’s new nurse was super cool with her blue hair and piercings and her take-no-prisoners vibe. Eleanor knew for a fact that it didn’t matter what she did, she would never be as cool as Hedra.

“No. I’m Wes’s driver. I mean, I’m not just his driver. I drive all sorts of people to different events and places. But Wes is my best customer,” Eleanor said.

“Why doesn’t he drive?”
