His lion’s panic was a living, breathing thing inside of him. His hands clenched into tight fists, he said, “I’ll give you the formula. Just do not hurt my mate.”

“That’s better,” Chad said.

Wes’s lion snarled at the smug tone of the man’s voice.

“Now, let’s get back to business.” Chad’s voice turned brisk. “I want the formula, and you want Eleanor. Tonight, at midnight, bring the formula to Brooks Sawmill on Highway Five. You give us the formula, and we give you Eleanor. Clean and easy.”

Wes glanced at the others. They all had the same look of disbelief on their faces that he knew covered his.

“You still there, Mr. Masters?” Chad said.

“Yes,” Wes said.

“Do we have a deal or not?”

“We do.”

“Perfect. This probably goes without saying but come alone. You tell law enforcement or bring your security shifter friends with you, we will kill Eleanor. Do you believe me?”

“Yeah,” Wes said.

“Good. See you soon.”

Wes reached out and stabbed the button on the phone to end the call. His hands still shook, and he flexed them once or twice before taking a deep breath. His lion paced frantically within him. His low growls and soft whimpers amped up Wes’s emotions.

“We need a plan,” Cooper said. “Despite what Eleanor’s father said, we have to assume that some of the twelve are getting serum, just like Rourke.”

“Do we?” Boone said. “If there were more like him, wouldn’t they have come with Rourke? Or attacked Eleanor again before now?”

“Yes,” Wes said through numb lips. “And if they still had more, this Chad guy would have corrected me when I said Rourke was the only one left.”

“You don’t know that for certain,” Cooper said as the phone rang again.

“I’ll answer that at reception.” Daisy hurried out of the boardroom, closing the door behind her.

“There aren’t any more of the enhanced,” Wes said. “You know as well as I do that it’s only Rourke.”

“Fine,” Cooper said. “But they’ll have more than just Rourke and this Chad guy at the sawmill tomorrow night.”

“How did you know it was Rourke who attacked you, and that guy on the phone was Chad?” Chase asked Wes.

“Lucky guess,” Wes said.

“How many shifters do you think they’ll have there?” Cooper said.

Grayson shrugged. “Hard to tell. If they believe Wes will come alone, there might be only half a dozen, maybe a dozen at most. Or, it could be humans with guns.”

“We have to assume it’ll be both,” Cooper said. “Let’s say ten to twelve shifters and humans - the five of us won’t be enough.”

“Are you forgetting something? The minute they smell us, they’ll kill Eleanor,” Grayson said. “I’ve driven past the sawmill. It was shut down about ten years ago and abandoned. It’s also in the middle of nowhere. There’s a wooded area directly behind the sawmill, but even if we hide there, they’ll still be able to smell us. And the place is so isolated that they won’t think it’s just some shifters going for a midnight hike. They’ll know Wes isn’t alone, and they’ll kill Eleanor.”

“The Scent B Gone spray,” Chase said.

“Fuck me, you’re brilliant,” Boone said with a grin. “We just got a fucking case of it delivered Friday afternoon. We spray ourselves down with that shit, and they won’t smell a fucking thing.”

Cooper nodded. “I’ll talk to some of my contacts and get a few extra men to -”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” Gray said.
