She swallowed hard and said, “We haven’t told anyone about the formula. So, when Wes brings it, you can just let us go. We won’t say a word.”

“Of course.” Chad turned sideways in his seat and stared at her over the headrest. “That’s the deal, Eleanor. Wes brings the flash drive, and he gets his mate.”

“And you let us live,” she said.

“Absolutely.”

“Liar,” she said.

Hoyt snorted laughter, and Chad arched an eyebrow at him before saying, “I’m not lying. As long as your mate does what he’s told, the two of you will live.”

Eleanor glanced at Hoyt. “He’s gonna try to sell me a bridge next, right?”

Hoyt just grinned at her. He wasn’t nearly as big as Rourke, and she suspected he was human based on the guns he carried, but he scared her nearly as much as Rourke did. It was the utter lack of emotion in his gaze and the way he studied her like she was a bug he needed to squash.

Her mouth dry, she said, “I’m not a bug. I’m a butterfly.”

“What?” Chad said.

“I’m a butterfly,” she repeated.

“Christ, I can see why your old man cut you out of his life,” Hoyt said. “You’re loony.”

“For your information, he cut me out of his life because I didn’t want to be a biochemist like him and create serums that fucked up shifters,” Eleanor said.

Chad frowned at her. “What we’re doing, what we’re creating, will change the world, Eleanor.”

“Not for the better,” Eleanor said.

“Yes, it will,” Chad said.

“They killed innocent humans. How is that for the better?”

“How do you know that?” Chad said sharply.

“Does it matter? I know that Rourke and the others went crazy because of the serum, but you and the people you work for didn’t give a fuck. You just want to use it for your own nefarious reasons.”

“Nefarious reasons?” Hoyt laughed. “I’m starting to like this girl.”

“The feeling is not mutual,” Eleanor said with a glance at the gun.

“That’s fair,” Hoyt said.

“It’s past midnight,” Chad said. “Where the fuck is he?”

“It’s only two minutes past,” Hoyt said. “Relax, Chad.”

“Maybe he doesn’t care about you the way he said,” Chad said to Eleanor.

She didn’t reply, but a trickle of hope went through her. Maybe Wes wouldn’t show up. Sure, he said she was his mate, but they’d been dating for, what, fifteen hours? She couldn’t blame him if he changed his mind. Hell, she would.

No, you wouldn’t.

Okay, probably not. She’d been in love with Wes for at least the last nine months, even if she hadn’t said the words out loud until recently.

Fuck, she really hoped he didn’t show up.

“He’s not going to be alone,” Hoyt said. “You know that, right?”
