“Please, Grain. Just don’t slip or anything. I really want this to be a surprise for him.”

“I ain’t gonna fucking tell Hades!” Grain shouted.

“Tell me what?”

Vada froze, eyes wide, and slowly shifted to the side, seeing Hades standing in the doorway.

Dammit, Grain!

****

What the hell did I just walk in on?

The silence was interesting. And a dead giveaway. Whatever he’d walked into, it wasn’t meant for his ears. The whole scene was suspicious, but nothing more so than Vada. She’d never mentioned to him she was stopping by the clubhouse.

Hades stood at the doorway, scanning over the group at the bar. Only half were making eye contact. Kase lifted his chin. Trax and Rourke glanced over but remained silent. It was clear whatever Grain wasn’t supposed to tell Hades wasn’t a secret to his brothers. Hades started toward Vada and looked over at the younger couple sitting with Kase.

“Ryder, Sydney,” Hades said. “How’s it going?”

“Good, man.”

“Hi, Hades.” Sydney smiled and gave a quick wave, then immediately shifted her eyes to the beer in front of her. He didn’t know her well, but she was showing all the signs of avoiding eye contact.

He rounded Regina and Grain’s stools. “Didn’t know you were coming up, brother.”

Grain grabbed his beer, chugging half the bottle, then slammed it on the bar. “That’s ’cause you ain’t my keeper. Already got one of those, and she’s better fucking looking than you.”

Hades eyed Grain, who refused to look at him. He was about to ask what Grain was supposed to keep from him when Vada’s fingers slid over his knuckles. One touch was all it took, and she had his full attention. And she knew it. He threaded his fingers through hers and pulled her against his chest. He leaned down slightly, and she hopped up on her toes and kissed him. It was quick, and then she sat on her stool, but she hadn’t let go of his hand.

She probably should’ve let go, considering her palm was getting sweatier by the second. Another sign that his woman was nervous. Hades kept his gaze locked on her. She shifted in her seat, rubbing her thumb across his knuckles.

“So, um…” She snickered. “I didn’t know you were coming by the clubhouse.”

Hades cocked his brow. “I was just thinking the same about you. What are you doing here?”

Vada smiled with a shrug. Something was definitely off with her.

“Oh, I just stopped in for a drink.”

Bullshit.

It may have been true for any of the other women. All of them had free reign at the clubhouse. On any given night, there were at least one or two. Some came in with their men; others came on their own. There weren’t any rules against it. But it was highly suspect since Vada rarely came by without him or one of the old ladies. And never on a weeknight when she had school the next day.

What are you hiding?

Hades eyed the empty counter in front of her. “You been here long?”

“About thirty minutes.”

“Where’s your drink?”

She flicked her lashes. “My what?”

Hades arched his brow. “The drink you came in to have?”

Her eyes widened, and her mouth fell open. Yeah, busted, sweetheart. Vada was good at a lot of things, but lying wasn’t one of them.

“Here it is.”
