What?

“Wait, how did you know?”

It was impossible to get a read on him.

“She reached out to me. Said she wanted to come with your aunt. Said she wanted to see her daughter get married.”

She wanted to see me get married?

“She did?”

Hades nodded. “And she apologized for what happened with Allie.”

It was as if Vada had been transported to an alternate universe. Her mother had apologized? To Hades?

She swallowed the lump in her throat and managed to get the words out. “She did?”

The corner of his mouth curled. “Yeah. You okay with that?”

Was she? She shouldn’t be. Her gaze darted to the door, but her mother had already gone inside. She’s actually here? After everything that had happened, her mother was the last person she should want to see.

“Baby?”

Vada slowly pulled her eyes from the door, focusing on Hades. “Are you okay with this?”

Hades face softened, and he cupped her cheek. “It’s not about me. It’s about you. You okay with her being here?”

It was as if he knew the answer before she said it. Vada drew in a breath, smiled, and nodded.

Hades leaned in, kissed her, and grabbed her hand, leading her into the hallway to the bar. It was pretty cleared out except for a small line of women waiting to use the bathroom. The two at the end had Vada rushing her steps. Her aunt turned before Vada reached them and smiled, holding out her arms.

“It was beautiful, Vada.” Gloria grabbed her for a hug. “Best wedding I’ve been to except for my second one.” Gloria stepped back. “That one was one hell of a party.”

The small group laughed, even Hades. Her aunt welcomed him with a hug, and surprisingly, Hades gave in to it. Vada smiled at her mother. She wasn’t sure she’d ever seen her so uncomfortable. It was as if their roles had been reversed.

Her mother cleared her throat. “It was a beautiful ceremony. And you look stunning.”

“Thank you.”

It was awkward, to say the least. Even with her aunt dominating the conversation and making jokes, there was still a lot of tension. Vada was so busy sneaking looks at her mother she hadn’t seen Hades move to her side until he offered her mother his hand.

“Roman Monroe.”

Her mother took his hand, and Vada noticed her hand shaking slightly.

“Carolyn Zink. It’s nice to formally meet you.”

“Don’t you have something else to say?” Gloria said.

Oh hell. Vada was content with the current state of the moment. She didn’t want anything to darken her day.

Gloria widened her eyes and pointed to Hades. “The man saved you from falling on your ass. Least you could do is thank him.”

What?

Her mother squinted. “I did thank him, but” —she turned to Hades— “Thank you again.”

Hades nodded, and Vada grabbed his hand. She was sure watching her mother fall on her butt would’ve been sweet revenge for Hades. But he hadn’t let it happen. I love you.
