“When did they start showing up again?”

She blinked and tilted her head. “They never stopped. They’ve been there every night. I guess they don’t scare easily.” She snorted and wiped her eyes with her sleeve. “If you guys showed up and told me not to come around again, I’d probably move to another state.”

Their reputation was known far and wide as being one of the more violent clubs around. For their warning to go unheeded made Trax suspicious. The last-minute ride out had had the prospects delivering the message. A message that apparently was not understood. It would be handled by him this time, and it would be made clear Cheyenne was under his protection—she was untouchable. He stepped forward, and her eyes grew to the size of saucers.

“Now can I sit next to you?’

She shook her head.

“Okay.” He stepped forward again until he stood in front of her. The fear he saw ripped at his heart. A heart that had gone cold so many years ago. He squatted in front of her, putting them at eye level. She shifted back, tightening her grip on the edge of the bed.

“Did they rape you?”

She scanned his face. Her eyes welled, and a shot of adrenaline spiked up to his chest. He would fucking kill them, but not before he made them suffer. His repeated words came out in a menacing tone. “Did they rape you?”

She released the bed, wiping her tears from her eyes. A slow shake of her head. “No, but not because they didn’t try.” She drew in a breath. “Some homeless guy scared them away. If he hadn’t come along…” Her body shook, and Trax couldn’t resist it any longer. He slid up next to her on the bed, swinging his arm across her back, and pulled her into his side.

She came willingly and nestled her face against his chest. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d served as comfort to a woman, but if she was willing to accept it, he wanted nothing more than to hold Cheyenne. He leaned closer, his nose skimming her hair, and breathed in her scent.

“Trax,” she whispered. It was the first time she’d said his name.

“Yeah?”

“Can you please take me home? You owe me, right? That’s what I want. I just wanna go home,” she whimpered. He pulled her closer. He expected a little resistance, but she curled into him, needing someone, anyone. Her hands curled into her chest, and her moist face brushed against his bare skin.

“I’m gonna get ya home, okay? Need ya to trust me, Chey. No one’s gonna hurt ya.”

“I just really wanna go home.” She shook against his chest. Her tears ripped him apart. He slid his hand over her back soothingly. His hope was to put her at ease. He’d make sure she got home safe, but first, he needed to handle other things.

“I’m gonna clean ya up, Chey.” He hugged her closer to his side before he released her and made his way into his bathroom. He got a clean washcloth and soaked it with warm water. He grabbed a dry hand towel and did a sniff test, making sure it was clean.

He found her as he’d left her, huddled on his bed with her head drawn down. He squatted in front of her, bringing the cloth to her lip. She winced, and his hand stilled. The last thing he wanted was to cause her any more pain.

“Sorry,” he whispered.

“It’s okay, it’s just really sensitive.” She glanced up, and the corners of her lips curled slightly. “Thanks for doing this.”

She thanked him? After all she’d gone through, she remained sweet. Those motherfuckers were gonna pay for what they did to her. He’d personally see to it.

He gave a sharp nod and continued to carefully wipe the dried blood from her face. He couldn’t remember a time when he’d cared for a woman he hadn’t been involved with. There was something about her. She felt like his, and it broke him up inside knowing she’d been hurt. Not only had the club made her a promise, but he personally felt responsible. She’d trusted his word, and he’d broken it. Had he known the outcome beforehand, he would have defied Kase’s orders for the run and handled it himself. Then she would have been safe. He scanned her bruising cheeks, swollen eyes, and the tear in her lip. His shoulders tensed, and his breath shallowed. He’d let this happen to her. He tossed the rag to the side and then clasped his hands in hers.

“Need to go talk to the guys. I’m gonna lock the door behind me. Need anything? Food, drink?”

She raised her brows in question. “To go home?”

He smiled. Even bruised, battered, and seemingly defeated, she still had spirit. “I’ll be back in five.”

She scanned the room, hugging herself. She was scared. He couldn’t just leave her by herself. He opened the door, spotting Gage at the end of the hall. “Gage, get me one of the girls.”

His eyebrows cocked up. “Now?” From his expression alone, Trax knew where his brother’s mind had gone. He couldn’t fault him. When a brother requested a girl, it usually wasn’t for anything but sex.

Trax sighed and rolled his eyes. “To sit with her. I need to talk to the prospects.”

Clarity struck, and he jerked his chin. “Right, sorry. Nadia, come hang with her for a few.”

Nadia appeared and sauntered toward him. She was usually with Kase, but she wasn’t his old lady, so she made the rounds. She’d even warmed Trax’s bed a few times. She wasn’t so much like the others. She was great in bed but never looking for more. She was usually gone before he woke up in the morning.

She stepped in front of him and smiled. “I’ll be nice, I promise.”
