“Chey.” He stroked her face. “Stop, sweetheart. Not gonna get hurt.” His features softened, and a small smile spread across his face. “Don’t like seeing ya weepy, but gotta say, feels nice ya worrying about me.”

“I do.” She sniffled and silently prayed her nose wasn’t running.

“And I’m telling you, ya got no reason.”

But there was reason. As long as the man was out there, Trax wouldn’t be safe.

“Then let me do it. I wanna go to the club.”

He stared at her for a long while. He seemed to be contemplating. Maybe he was trying to figure out if she was doing it for the right reasons or not. Either way, she was going, and she would help them out if it meant keeping him safe.

He nodded and licked his lips. “I gotcha, Chey. Nothing’s gonna happen at the club. I know you don’t believe me, but that’s one place ya never have to worry about whether you’re safe or not. You are. And here too, you’ll always be safe at my place, in my bed, anytime and anywhere with me. Ya got me?”

“Yeah.”

Chapter Thirteen

Cheyenne was seated in the middle of the living room, finishing up the last of the orders. The week had proved to be their best yet. A storefront was still a futuristic goal, but they were on their way. She leaned over, checking her phone.

“What’s the matter? Lord Leather dodging your calls?” Macy snorted. “I’m not surprised.”

Cheyenne turned toward the hall just as Macy made her way to the kitchen. Snark and sarcasm had been running rampant in the apartment the last week. Cheyenne understood her friend’s reluctance with Trax, but Macy took it to new heights. She couldn’t whisper his name without Macy going into a tirade about what she thought of him.

Her phone pinged, and she grabbed it.

Trax: Pick you up at 9

Cheyenne: Yes.

“Ugh.” Macy groaned, gaining Cheyenne’s attention. It was her plan.

Cheyenne sighed, and her shoulders slumped. Here we go…

“What the hell are you doing here, Chey?” Macy rested her hands on her hips and cocked her head. It was easy to read her face—confusion and aggravation were hard to mask. Cheyenne reminded herself it was Macy’s concern that caused her to be a gigantic pain in the ass when it came to her love life.

“I’m finishing up orders.” She smiled up at her friend, who glared back at her. Cheyenne knew exactly what the question referred to, and it had nothing to do with their business.

“And him?”

Cheyenne rolled her eyes as she gathered the last of the packing slips and moved them to the kitchen table. The way she referred to Trax as him, as if she couldn’t bear to speak his name. I get it, Mace. Trax wasn’t Prince Charming. He wasn’t from money, and he didn’t have a white-collar job. Hell, he’d served time. No, he wasn’t going to be someone’s model version of the perfect boyfriend; she understood it. But Macy didn’t know Trax. She didn’t have a view into Chey’s heart.

Telling Macy it was none of her business was not an option. Being best friends for so long had given her a right into Cheyenne’s life and vice versa. It was best to handle this with care. Extreme care with a touch of vagueness. Telling her to mind her own business was not going to go over well at that moment, and the last thing she wanted was more confrontation with an already annoyed Macy.

She sighed, shrugging as she leaned back into the sofa. “I don’t know.” She would give her the bare minimum. After all, her relationship was really none of her business.

“You don’t know? What the hell kinda answer is that?”

She snorted. “I don’t know, I guess we’re hanging out.”

“Hanging out?” Macy’s eyes widened, and her jaw tightened.

“Yes, and please stop repeating everything I say with a question.” Cheyenne tucked her feet under her butt and sat up straight. “We’re getting to know each other, so yeah, I guess dating.” She could gauge the unhappiness in Macy’s expression. “You told me to have fun.” And Macy had, before the threatening incident. That had changed everything

“Yeah, fun as in having sex once, maybe twice if he was any good.” She stepped forward and spread her arms in front of her. “Not date him. Hell, Chey, do bikers even date anyway?”

Cheyenne chuckled. Macy made Trax out to be inhumane.

“Yeah, I’m pretty sure it’s in their bylaws they can date.”
