The man’s chest rose steadily, but he could not hide the glint of fear in his eyes. His gaze darted across the room, and Cheyenne stepped back against the wall. Desperation made people do crazy things, and this man was desperate to get out of the room. His chances were slim to none since Trax, Rourke, and Gage had it blocked. She was probably in the safest spot she could be with Kase and Hades in front of her, but she wanted to be close to another. She craned her neck and caught Trax’s profile, his cheeks hollowed from his clenched jaw. His gaze locked on the man.

“Does it matter?” the man shouted. “I’m a fucking dead man, all on the word of some worthless cunt.”

She shivered and crossed her arms around her waist. She stared at Trax, and his brows furrowed before lunging forward. Rourke grabbed his arm, which Trax struggled against.

“Fucking lying bitch,” the man shouted and came forward. Hades and Kase blocked him from getting closer than two feet, but it was enough to have her slide past them and barrel into Rourke, who stood on the left side of the door. He wrapped his arm around her shoulders, and she pushed at his ribs.

“Calm down, Chey, not gonna hurt ya.”

“Get off me,” she screamed, getting the attention of the whole room. Trax turned and rushed for her, pulling her from Rourke and curling her into his side. Finally, she felt safe. She wrapped her arms around his waist and felt his hold tighten against her body

“Get her outta here, Trax,” Kase said.

“She’s fucking lying.” The man sidestepped Hades but was thrown back against the bed by Kase.

“You come at her one more fucking time, you’ll have a bullet through your fucking head before you can even blink.” Kase turned to Trax. “Take her outside. Now.”

“But she…” The man, who dangled off the mattress, never finished his sentence.

Hades barreled forward, leaning over him. “Look me in the eye and tell me she’s wrong, it wasn’t you.”

The silence was deafening.

Cheyenne peeked around Trax’s bicep to see the man lean forward. The ball in his throat bobbed. “On my life, Hades, it wasn’t me.”

From the angle Cheyenne had, she could see him, the same as the day he’d killed Mick. It was him, not a sliver of a doubt, though he had such conviction in his lie. Speaking as though it was the truth and swearing on his own life.

“Good.”

The man’s body sagged in relief. “Now, you believe me?”

Hades laughed. “Fuck no, you’re a lying piece of shit. But it’s good we find out now before you were patched in as a brother.” Hades leaned forward with a sinister smile. “Ready to meet your maker?” He turned his head and locked eyes with Cheyenne. He gave a sharp nod before glancing up to Trax. “Get her outta here.”

Trax huddled her into his chest and lifted her, walking past Rourke and into the hall. The place was still packed, and from the happenings in the hall, no one had a clue what was going down in the bedroom they’d just left. He stopped at his door and shifted her onto her feet. She glanced over his shoulder to see Rourke behind him, staring down at her.

“C’mon.” He shuffled her into his room and turned to Rourke. “Thanks.”

Rourke nodded. “Gave ya my word.” He turned to leave, but Cheyenne stepped forward.

“Rourke?”

He glanced over his shoulder.

“Can you, uh, check on Macy for me? I left her at the bar, and I just wanna make sure she’s okay.”

Something crossed over his features, a softness that seemed so out of place on his hard face. “Yeah.”

Before she had a chance to thank him, he was gone. Trax closed the door and turned toward her but didn’t come forward. Even knowing him for such a short time, she knew where his mind was, and it wasn’t with her in his room.

“Go.”

He stood staring at her, and she could see it. He was conflicted as to stay with her or go back to Kase’s room.

“Trax, go.” She sat on his bed, staring up at him. “Later on, we’ll go back to your house. Just you and me.” She grasped her hands on the edge of the mattress. “But right now, it’s about the club. I get it.” She sighed. “Go.”

“I’ll stay here if you ask me.”

She smiled. “You would?”
