“I think she’s still breaking down a few things with Shawnie,” Autumn offers.

Right, that makes sense. Juliet said that the janitors for tonight would take down her balloon arches, but she probably wants to take the pictures down carefully and stow those away somewhere.

“I’ll go find her… thanks,” I tell them. I’m about ready to head to the stadium until I hear my name.

“Ryker Haynes?”

I look down the hall, the opposite way that I was headed, to see a guy in slacks and a blazer standing further away from everyone.

I head in his direction, doubling back past Autumn and Tessa and the opening to the media room where Powers is being interviewed. Autumn and Tessa seem completely immersed listening to Lake’s answers.

“Yeah, that’s me. Are you part of media? I just finished so if you have other questions you’ll have to—”

“No, Mr. Haynes, I’m with immigration.”

Immigration? No one told me we’d need another interview this early on but whatever. Juliet is still in the building and we can pound this out right now and send him on his way.

“If you need another interview, my wife is at the entrance of the stadium. I can get her.”

“That won’t be necessary, Mr. Haynes. I only need to talk to you.”

Only me?

“Ok… what can I do for you?”

“Mr. Haynes, my name is Henry Morris and I’m the supervising officer over an immigration employee by the name of Frank Bishop. Does that name ring a bell?”

Shit… the look on this guy’s face says that this isn’t a house call visit.

“Yes, I met with Frank for my K-1 visa interview. Why?”

“It’s come to my attention that you applied for the K-1 visa with the intention of fraudulently marrying someone to stay in this country. Is that correct?”

I can feel the tops of my ears heat and my stomach drop. How the hell am I supposed to answer that question?

“Wait, hold on a second, where are you getting this information?”

“It has also come to my attention, after a fair amount of digging, that Mr. Bishop has money on the Hawkeyes winning the Stanley Cup. Is that true?” he asks.

“Where are you coming up with this information? My wife and I are in love. You can't prove that we did anything fraudulent,” I say, looking quickly over my shoulder to make sure that Autumn and Tessa don’t hear this conversation, but they’re still glued to Lake’s interview.

Henry pulls out his phone and hits a button, then turns the phone toward me.

It’s the video that Amelia asked the water boy to record of me proposing.

Fucking hell…

He hits replay and I hear my voice over the speaker.

“So what I was going to say is that we’ve been together for a while now and ... and with my visa about to expire, I think it makes sense that we get married.”

“Where did you get that?” I ask.

“Just a concerned citizen who doesn’t like it when someone tries to take advantage of our laws.”

A concerned citizen, my ass.

You mean a jealous spoiled brat who didn’t get the televised proposal and the big diamond ring she was angling for? The same one who ended up empty-handed after Mateo Easton dumped her?
