I don’t know what James’s reasoning for wanting me to stay. I would assume he’s in communication with Ryker but he’s never said as much, and I’m too prideful to ask. Either way I won’t be persuaded, whether it’s James asking me to stay or if it’s Ryker using James as his puppet. Though I don’t know why Ryker would care either.

If he cared, he would have at least had the decency to break it off with me in person instead of leaving a note.

What Ryker wants is irrelevant to me. He didn’t care what I wanted.

“I’ve already moved into my new apartment and I’m looking for an office space that I don’t have to ride up eight flights to get to. You can tell Ryker that if he would like to discuss this further, he can call me himself. That is, if he finally has a phone number that hasn’t been disconnected,” I say, and then hang up.

I don’t feel good about hanging up on James like that but all he’s going to do is keep saying things to make me stay, like he has for the last couple of months. I don’t need any more connection to Ryker.

It’s bad enough that we’re still legally married.

I’ve been waiting for the divorce papers from his lawyers to arrive, but they haven’t.

I hold my breath every time someone knocks on the door, expecting it to be a courier with the papers, but it never is. I can’t live like this.

I would send him the divorce papers myself, but every time I’m about to call a divorce lawyer to book an appointment, the diamond on my hand catches my eye and I’m reminded that even though things were fake when I said “until death”, I meant those words… even then.

And I wish so badly that I didn’t.

But I still mean them now.

Chapter Thirty

Juliet

It’s the first morning in my new apartment. I haven’t unpacked a single thing since we moved everything yesterday and all my luggage is still in the back of my SUV.

Since I don’t have any appointments today, my day is free. I thought I would set up my brand-new office with the furniture I ordered online that got here a couple days ago. If setting up my first home office in my brand-new apartment doesn’t cheer me up, then I don’t know what will.

But first… coffee.

I head for my kitchen and to the house warming coffee maker that my mom bought me for my new apartment, and load a single pod into it.

It hisses and moans as the coffee maker comes to life, pouring liquid gold into my cup.

I pour it over a cup of ice and give it a minute to melt.

My phone starts ringing next to my cup.

It’s not a number programmed into my phone but under the phone number, the area code is weird. I look below the number to see that it tells me the number is an international phone number from Canada.

My heart literally skips a beat. In less than a second, I debate both answering and screening the call to make Ryker sweat it out. Maybe he should wonder where I am and why I’m not answering, but I can’t do it. I don’t have enough self-restraint when it comes to him, and I still have so many questions that I want answers to.

Like, why did you leave a note instead of telling me in person?

Why didn’t you ask me to go with you?

Do you ever think about me?

And my least favorite but the one that keeps me up at night… are you seeing anyone?

I click on the green ‘accept’ button and lift the phone to my ear. “Hello?”

“Hi, Juliet?”

It’s a woman’s voice.

I couldn’t be any more confused.
