The second I walk back through the sliding glass doors of the center, I realize that Ryker was right. I blow out a breath and the feeling of so much weight on my chest has vanished.

Without having to concern myself about losing Jerrin’s spot, I can now focus one hundred percent of my energy on the fiancé visa interview that we have in forty-five minutes.

Chapter Eleven

Ryker

Seeing her text gives me reassurance that she didn’t get cold feet last night and decide to bail on me today.

She’s already on her way while I sit in my car in the parking garage a couple blocks from the immigration office.

I had nowhere else to go after practice this morning, and I wanted to get here as soon as possible. You never know what kind of traffic you might hit driving through downtown, and this isn’t the kind of appointment you show up late for.

I wait in the parking lot until I see her SUV pull into the parking garage a few rows away from me. I get out and head for her vehicle so we can walk in together.

“How did the lease signing go?” I ask, my voice echoing off the cement ceiling and walls.

She smiles when she looks up and realizes it’s me making my way to her across the cement parking lot structure.

“You waited for me?” she asks, stepping down from her SUV.

She looks beautiful and well put together, like always.

Her long, dark, silky hair is styled in a professional bun. She’s wearing another peacoat, though a light pink instead of the tan one she was wearing on the ice when I proposed, a white blouse, black leather pants, and a set of dark pink pumps.

She looks sophisticated, yet approachable in all the pink.

Against my slacks, button-up shirt and blazer… skipping the tie, I have to say, together, we look like a well-dressed couple.

“I had to make sure that you found the place ok,” I say, sticking out my elbow for her to grip onto my arm for stability in those heels.

“Is it that or did you want to make sure I showed up?” she asks with a teasing twinkle in her eyes.

“It might have been a little of both,” I admit.

She lets out a chuckle as we walk toward the exit of the parking garage.

“The signing went flawlessly, thanks to you. You were right, completing the paperwork just now… I feel so much calmer knowing Jerrin is taken care of. I didn’t realize how unsettled I felt until the second she gave me a move-in date,” she admits.

She pulls closer to me to avoid a passerby walking in the opposite direction as us down the busy sidewalk of Seattle.

“I’m glad to hear that issue is settled for you.”

She pulls out her phone from her pocket and her fingers start briskly texting back with one of her arms still wrapped around mine in case she trips.

I want to lean in a little further to see who’s talking with but we’re still getting to know each other and it doesn’t seem like any of my business. Though the idea of some guy hitting up my fiancée puts a pang of jealousy in my chest and I clench my fist.

She notices my eyes on her and looks up from her phone after she sends off the text and tucks it back in her pocket.

“It’s from Autumn. I guess you have an alumni event coming up in two weeks that Shawnie and I need to plan.”

Oh right, alumni week is coming up.

“The Hawkeyes like to ramp up for the championship games so they start doing more spirit week-type stuff in the weeks before to get the crowds excited. Alumni week is when we bring in one or two ex-Hawkeyes players for every home game that week to do the coin toss.”

“Oh, I see,” she says.

“Is this going to be your first event for the Hawkeyes?” I ask, not remembering her saying she’s planning anything else yet.
