“Yes, exactly.”

“Do you want them to move the other bed to storage?” the head of security asks.

“No need. They can donate it or trash it.”

I add more strips of bacon to the frying pan.

“Very good sir. I’ll draft up a memo for the rest of the team just in case the furniture company shows up when I’m not on shift.”

“Thanks,” I tell him, and then hang up the phone.

I called up the furniture shop that I’ve bought everything for this penthouse from this morning and asked them to send me their most popular in-stock king-sized bed set and deliver it to my house before I get back from Canada.

I hear Juliet’s footsteps emerge from the hallway as I lay my phone on the countertop and continue stirring the eggs.

“Did I just hear you say you ordered a bed?” she asks, sliding onto one of the barstools at the island.

“Yeah. It should be here and set up when we get back from Canada.”

I don’t turn around. I don’t want to make this a dramatic moment. It’s simple. The woman I want in my bed doesn’t feel comfortable in it, so I ordered a brand-new one that neither of us have slept in with other people.

“Did you do that for me?” she asks.

I have the option of a yes or no answer but honesty seems like the only way to go here.

“Yes,” I say simply. “Do you want eggs and bacon?”

I hear her slide off the barstool and walk around the island toward me.

She leans up against the countertop to my right.

“I’m sorry about last night,” she says. “I mean, not how I reacted to Amelia but how I closed you out after. Seeing another woman in the penthouse when I walked in… was…”

“You thinking that your mother’s prophecy was coming to fruition?” I say, because this is what I thought it was about.

“Yes… I guess so.” She nods, glancing down at her platform Keds sneakers. It’s the only time I haven’t seen her in heels besides barefoot, but I won’t get stuck on that when we have bigger things to discuss.

It’s not that her pulling away didn’t have anything to do with me, it’s just that it had more to do with her father and the fear she has that I’ll do the same thing. That what her mother tells her is correct.

I get it. Which is why the bed has to go.

“You didn’t need to buy a new bed,” she says. “Trusting in this area is just hard for me, especially faced with a woman from your past standing in the hallway in lingerie.”

I clamp my eyes shut for a second, wishing I could erase that moment between us, but I can’t.

If the roles were in reverse and I walked in on a guy practically naked, waiting for my wife to show up, I’d probably have beaten the guy until he was unrecognizable.

I’m just glad I showed up when I did to kick Amelia out before Juliet formed any other ideas about what was going on.

I stop stirring the eggs and drop the spatula on the countertop.

I turn to her and wrap my hand around her hip, pulling her in closer to me. Now getting a good look at her, she’s dressed more casually than usual too.

“The new bed is going to be good. It’s a clean slate moving forward.”

She nods up at me.

“Are you hungry then?” I ask.
