“Not yet. He said that he wants to meet up but he has a big project that he’s trying to finish. We’re going to meet up when he’s done.”

“He’s putting off meeting you for a work project? Really? Does he know that you’re seeing someone else?”

“I’m not seeing anyone else,” I tell her, though I know she won’t let me get away with that.

Her head tilts to the side, and she sighs. She thinks I’m being difficult, but I’m simply telling the truth.

Slade and I are not dating.

But it’s not as if I haven’t considered telling Win that Slade and I have done more than skate during practice.

The thing is, Win and I have no agreement not to see other people. Will my admission lead to him feeling compelled to tell me about all of his conquests since we started talking again?

I'm not sure if I can handle that.

“Are you holding yourself back from seeing if there is something between you and Slade just because of a guy you haven’t met in person?”

“That’s not exactly it…” I say, but I’m not a good liar, and she sees right through it.

“Oh my God, it is! Penelope,” she says, adjusting her seat to lean in across the table a little closer. “This email guy disappeared on you for four years and then just showed back up out of the blue with no explanation as to where he’s been, what he was doing, or why he stopped talking to you. And now, after all these years, he thinks you should do more waiting before meeting up so he can complete a work project?”

She makes a good point.

What project could be so important that meeting up with me would derail that?

“Maybe you’re right,” I say.

I don’t know what he does for a living or what this project could be about, but there isn’t any project I’ve ever done that would keep me from wanting to meet him finally after all these years.

“If Lake and I had spent four years apart and had just emerged from some hole in the world where the internet couldn’t reach me, nothing would prevent me from seeing him. I think you should demand to see him.”

I hate it when she’s right, but she’s right again.

SkatrGirlPen: I think we should meet now.

WinTheDay067: I’m still working on something. What’s the rush?

SkatrGirlPen: Slade and I kissed, and I need to know if there is something between you and I.

A kiss doesn’t quite convey the full picture but I think he’ll get the point.

WinTheDay067: Do you have feelings for him? Is that what this is about?

SkatrGirlPen: This is about you and me. Four years is long enough to have waited. I need to know once and for all if we have a future. Don’t you want to know too?

There's a long pause, and I held my breath, worried he might say no.

WinTheDay067: I already know that I want you, Pen. I have no doubts. Just tell me when and where.

The second I read his responses, I exhaled the oxygen from my lungs, instantly feeling lightheaded from not breathing.

SkatrGirlPen: Can you meet in two days at the public ice rink in the city? Do you skate?

WinTheDay067: Yeah, I can skate. I’ll meet you there. What time?

He agreed to meet me.

Finally!
