“Oh, don’t you be like that, Griz,” Devil said. “You know you need your best man on the job.”

“Uh-hunh.”

“I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that,” Devil said. “I know! I can cover you! From the trees!”

“Can you?” Griz said.

“Of course! Why would you even say something like that?”

“I can’t imagine.”

“I even have this great new thing, it can monitor radio traffic,” Devil said, nodding vigorously. “Like, cut in on the enemy communications, you know?”

“Really,” Griz said.

It was more of an unbelieving statement than a question. Devil was always up for whatever was going on, he always wanted to help, but approximately half of the time, whatever he was doing went sideways in one way or another. His over the top enthusiasm often outstretched his actual capabilities.

“You sound so negative,” Devil said. “This is important. Pony gets it. Right, Pony?”

“I’m… not sure I want to get into the middle of this,” Pony said.

“Look, dude,” Devil said. “You need all hands on deck with this. And I’m not about to leave you hanging out there all by your lonesome if you have to face the cartel. You want Pony with you to look over the guns? That makes sense. But you’re nuts if you think I’m going to let you go out there without me.”

Griz had to admit, Devil had never let him down, at least, not in spirit. Sure, whatever he was “fixing” came back even more broken half of the time, but you couldn’t deny the man was willing to drive into a hailstorm of razor blades for his friends.

“I’m glad to hear that, Devil,” he said.

“Fucking right,” Devil said. “You guys would never get anything done without me.”

“Now you’re kind of pushing it.”

“This is getting exciting!” Devil said. “I definitely need to bring my night vision goggles.”

“You have NODs?” Pony said.

“I have what?” Devil said. “Is that a venereal disease?”

“No, NODs. Night Optical Device.”

“Night Optical Device,” Devil said, his eyes lighting up as he said it. “Aw, hell yeah. I am going to learn all that military acronym shit from this dude! Hey, do you have a code name?”

“No fucking code names, Devil,” Griz said. “I mean it.”

“I don’t see why not.”

“Because it’s stupid. Now focus,” Griz said.

“Look, just leave the covering part up to me,” Devil said. “I’ll be in the woods, with my night v…. with my NODs… and my radio hacking gear and everything. I’ll have you covered.”

“You’re sure?” Griz said.

“Yes, I’m sure.”

Griz traded a look with Wyatt, who knew Devil as well as he did. Still, there was no denying the little guy’s enthusiasm. Or loyalty. Griz was glad he was with him.

“All right, then, Devil,” Griz said. “Me and Pony meet the cartel out in the field, you’re in the trees covering us.”

“And me with my thumb up my ass,” Wyatt muttered.
