They’d made a point to drive all the way out to Benny’s place so that he could crack into Death’s Head’s cell phones. If there was evidence on those phones, that might be the proof he was looking for.

He dialed the number Becca had given him earlier to contact Benny. It rang for a few times before finally being answered on the other end.

“Who is this?” Benny’s voice answered. “Who? How did you get this number?”

“Benny. It’s Griz.”

“Who?”

Right, Griz thought. Benny didn’t know him by name. Becca had been the one to do all the talking.

“It’s…” he said, looking at Devil and Pony before answering, “It’s Chewie. Becca’s friend.”

“Who?”

Griz sighed and said, “The Wookie.”

“Oh. Oh. Yes yes. The Wookie. She mentioned you might be calling me.”

“The Wookie?” Devil said.

Griz waved him off and said into his phone, “Benny, have you been able to get into those cell phones we brought to you?”

“As a matter of fact, yes. Yes I have. Just a little while ago. Very good timing. Very good.”

“Could you check and see if either one of those phones has either called or gotten a call from a particular number?”

“Of course. Easy button.”

“What?”

“Easy button. It will be very easy, Chewie.”

“You needed to get into a cell phone?” Devil said. “How come you didn’t ask me?”

“Shut up a minute, Devil. Here’s the number, Benny,” Griz said, and gave Benny Ripper’s cell phone number.

Griz wasn’t sure what answer he wanted to hear. If Ripper had been in contact with Death’s Head, that answered a lot of questions, but the last thing Griz wanted to hear was that one of the long standing members of the club had been working with the enemy.

Finally, Benny said, “Yes. Yes. Multiple calls.”

There it was. There could be no doubt, now, that Ripper was working with Death’s Head.

“How many calls?” Griz said.

“At least, five, six, seven…” Benny said. “A significant number. Including one tonight.”

It was all clear now. Ripper had been behind the attack at the cabin. He’d probably given the location to Death’s Head, had waited for them to shoot up the cabin for a while, and then swooped in and shot the same two guys he’d been working with just to make it look like he wasn’t involved.

No wonder he’d been able to take out two guys with assault rifles on his own with nothing but a pistol. He probably didn’t even have to sneak up on them; Death’s Head would’ve seen Ripper coming, thought he was going to help out, and then Ripper had been able to shoot one in the head before either man had ever seen it coming.

And why do all that?

With Boomer in a coma, Ripper had been pushing for war. And to open up a dialogue with the cartel. All so that he could start pushing crystal and coke, like he’d wanted to for years. This was a perfect opportunity to make it happen.

If Death’s Head had killed him and Becca at the cabin, that would have eliminated one more voice against dealing that poison. And, it would’ve served to stir up the MC even more, to make it even easier for Ripper to sway them to his way of thinking.

But as it was, with Ripper looking like he saved the day, he still had the benefit of making it look like Death’s Head was pushing on the MC hard. It made it seem like the cartel deal might be a good idea given the attack.
