But over and over, trouble kept coming their way. First the motel. Then the courthouse shooting. Then the cabin. Now Ripper.

All she wanted was for these problems to go away so that she and Griz could have their chance to be together without having to look over their shoulders for the rest of their lives. And it was starting to look like that would never happen.

“This isn’t over, is it?” she said.

“You want to go again?” Griz said.

“No, not the sex, damn it, Chewie!” she said, slapping him lightly on the chest. “My lady bits can’t take any more of that right now. I already feel like I need an ice pack.”

“Oh. What do you mean, then?”

“Ripper’s dead, but Death’s Head is still out there.”

“Hey!” he said.

“What?”

“You got their name right.”

“Yes, yes,” Becca said, rolling her eyes. “Whatever. Let’s just focus here.”

“All right.”

“So what do we do about Death’s Head?” she said.

“What do you mean?”

“We can’t keep going on like this,” she said. “Every other day, someone trying to kill us.”

Griz sighed.

“As much as I want revenge for my dad,” he said, “you’re right. This war has to end. Ripper… Ripper is just a symptom. This war is starting to bring out the worst in us. Ripper betraying the club. Meeting with the cartel. We have to end it.”

Becca could hardly believe her ears. Earlier, Griz had seemed so dead-set on getting revenge on Death’s Head that he couldn’t think of anything else. But now, now he seemed like he was starting to realize the same thing she had. That if they wanted to be together, they had to end this war.

“But how?” she said. “How do we do that?”

“I don’t know,” Griz said. “How would you do it?”

“Me?” she said, a little surprised that he would ask her.

“You’re a negotiator,” he said with a little shrug. “What would you do?”

She thought about it for a moment before answering.

“The first thing you do is try to figure out what the other side wants,” she said. “People don’t just do things randomly. They have an agenda.”

“We know what Ripper’s was,” Griz said.

“To try to get the MC dealing drugs,” Becca said. “But what does Death’s Head think they have to gain from a war with you?”

“Take our territory,” Griz said.

“Okay, but what does that actually do for them?” Becca asked, trying to put this all into terms she was familiar with. “If they take your territory, what do they gain?”

“They could deal here.”

“Right,” Becca said. “They would get more customers. But would that be worth it?”
