With that, the doors on the ambulance closed, and they were gone, leaving Griz standing on the street next to Becca, wondering what to say to her to make it all okay.

The police arrived shortly after the ambulance left, splashing blue and red flashing lights over everyone standing near the scene of the accident. Becca expected Griz and Wyatt to want to make a quick retreat in the face of the local police, but on the contrary, not only did they stay right where they were, they actively waved down the patrolman who responded to the scene.

“That you, Mackenzie?” Wyatt said, holding up a hand to shield his eyes from the lights.

“Sure is, Wyatt,” the police officer said. “Griz.”

Griz nodded. “Mackenzie.”

I guess they know each other, Becca thought. She found it a little odd that outlaw bikers would be on such a friendly basis with the local police, but then, she remembered Kate telling her that the MC had a lot of friends in the area.

“What happened here?” Mackenzie asked.

“Drive by, and then a hit and run,” Wyatt answered. “Crazy guy took a couple of random shots around the street and then gunned it. Ended up hitting this lady who was crossing the street.”

Becca noticed that when Wyatt was around, Griz tended to let him do the talking, content to hang in the background. She wasn’t sure why that was.

“Jesus,” Mackenzie said. “Shooting up the street? You get a look at the driver, or the license plate?”

Wyatt shook his head. “No luck there.”

“The vehicle was an old Ford Mustang,” Griz said. “The muffler was kind of shot on it. Loud, you know?”

The police officer, Mackenzie, nodded. Looking around the scene for a second or two, he then stepped closer to the two bikers and lowered his voice before saying, “You sure that’s all you guys saw?”

Wyatt nodded. “It happened pretty quick.”

“And you have no idea who this guy is?” Mackenzie said.

“Nope.”

“You just happened to be here nearby, though, when the shooting happened?”

“I was having dinner with my lady,” Wyatt said. “That’s her sister over there. We came out for a smoke, saw this car peel out, the guy capped off some rounds, and then hauled ass down the street.”

Becca frowned. She wasn’t sure why Wyatt was holding back information, but the lawyer in her told her to keep her mouth shut and not say anything yet, not until she had a better idea as to what was going on.

“Your lady,” Mackenzie said. “Oh, uh, the nurse, right?”

“Kate,” Wyatt said. “She helped out with the hit and run until the ambulance arrived. Went with them to the hospital. She’ll tell you the same as we are.”

“No need for that,” Mackenzie said. “You guys say that’s how it went, that’s how it went. I just wanted to make sure there’s nothing else you can help me with.”

“Hey, we want to see this guy caught as much as you,” Wyatt said. “Shooting up the street like a maniac. The lady he hit was pregnant.”

“We can’t have this kind of thing around here,” Griz said.

“All right,” Mackenzie said. “I’ll check with any other witnesses, but I doubt anybody got a license plate or solid description. You guys hang out for bit, okay?”

“No worries,” Wyatt said. “We’ll be right over there.”

After Wyatt and Griz stepped away from the police officer and over to her, Becca asked quietly, “How come you didn’t tell him about the Skull Faces?”

“Death’s Head,” Griz said.

“Whatever. Why didn’t you tell him that the driver was a Death’s Head?”
