And that was it.

“The rest of you can leave,” Mackenzie said into the microphone. “Not you, Number Two. Remain where you are.”

“What the fuck for?” Number Two shouted at the glass.

“Thank you, Miss,” Mackenzie said to Becca, but Becca wasn’t paying attention.

She watched as several police officers came into the room on the other side of the glass, one of them with handcuffs. Number Two spotted them and started backing away, shaking his head.

“Naw, naw, naw,” he said. “You motherfuckers said this was just a line-up. Just a fucking line-up!”

“It was,” one of the cops said. “And now you’re under arrest.”

“Fuck you!” Number Two shouted, and tried to run past the police officers to get out of the room.

He was tackled to the ground instantly, arms and legs flailing as he tried to fight the cops off. It was useless; there were four cops in there with him, and they had Number Two pinned with his arms behind his back within moments.

Number Two shouted and cursed and struggled the entire time, as they put the handcuffs on him, and after that as well, as they dragged him out of the room. Eventually, his curses shifted from the cops towards the glass and Becca standing behind it.

“You fucking bitch!” he shouted. “I know who you are! You think you can do this shit to me? My people will fucking end you!”

The shouts and curses continued even after Number Two was dragged from the room. His voice could be heard fading out even as the police hauled him off down a nearby hallway.

“We’ll fucking kill youuuuuuu….” Becca heard him saying.

“It’s just bluster,” Mackenzie said. “He has no idea who you are.”

“For now,” Becca said. “But when I testify, he’ll know who I am.”

“By then, it’ll be too late,” Mackenzie said.

For him, Becca thought. What about for me?

“How long until the trial?” she asked.

“Shouldn’t be a long wait,” Mackenzie said. “This is a slam dunk case with your eyewitness testimony. And with the optics on this… the shooting in public, the hit and run victim being pregnant and all… there’s a huge amount of pressure on the D.A.’s office to get this moving. So not long.”

That’s almost an answer, Becca thought.

“You did good, Becks,” Kate said. “Let’s go.”

Becca let her sister lead her out of the room, back to the waiting area where their friends were waiting for them. Well, friends was maybe an exaggeration, Becca thought. It was the Wookie and Wookie Sr., Wyatt, and Devil, who had all come out to support her while she did this.

She did find it comforting in a way, even touching. They’d said they would stand by her, and here they were. Becca had to admit, it was nice knowing that she had some serious backup if anything went wrong.

“How did it go?” Griz asked.

“Fine, Chewie,” Becca said. “Let’s just go.”

“Thank you, Becca,” Boomer said. “I know this sort of thing isn’t easy for those who aren’t in the life.”

Becca shrugged, but giant Yoda’s words did feel good to hear. It also felt good to have the four men surrounding her like an outlaw biker entourage as they left the police station. She felt kind of like the President, with very, very scruffy Secret Service agents all around her.

It was a good thing they were there.

There were two men leaned up against a car in the parking lot, near where the motorcycles and Kate’s car were parked. One of the men was enormous; he looked to Becca like a person made out of a concrete block. Not quite as tall as Griz, but tall, and his shoulders seemed to be as wide as he was tall and his chest muscles bulged out of the top of his tank top. His skin was crisscrossed in fat, squiggly veins and he had that over-inflated, about to explode look that bodybuilders got when they decided it was time to stop playing around and start takingallthe steroids.

The other one was shorter, rail skinny, with bad skin and baggy clothes. He looked familiar to Becca; once she saw the Grim Reaper tattoo on his neck, it all came crashing back in for her.
