She shook herself to shake out of those thoughts. She was coming out here to Kate’s to forget about all of that, to shake it off and to try to figure out what the hell she was going to do. And going to Kate’s seemed like the right move to help her make that happen.

She’d gone out to see her sister a few months ago, and seeing Kate for the first time in forever had reminded her how good it felt to actually physically be there with her sister, rather than just talking to her over the phone like they usually did.

Besides, Kate always had her life together. Recently, she’d gotten together with some pretty boy from a biker gang, and there had been all kinds of crazy drama with his psycho ex-wife, but now all that was resolved, and even Kate’s biker gang shenanigans seemed to be working out like clockwork.

Becca had always been a little jealous of how Kate seemed to be able to make lemonade out of lemons. There was a small part of her that was a little mad that she was running off to her sister’s, that Kate’s life always seemed so put together while Becca’s was a fat, hot, steaming mess.

Maybe it was just the shock of her life falling out from under her, and the sugar/alcohol hangover from Hell that was making her entire body as swollen as a sponge, that was making her feel this way. She and Kate had always been there for each other… heck, Becca had even helped her sister deal with the drama from her biker boyfriend’s psycho ex… and now, Becca knew that she needed a good solid dose of her sister to get her head right.

It all came into focus for her as soon as she saw Kate’s house. It felt good, like going home, even though she’d never actually lived there. This was the place she needed to be. This was exactly what she needed.

Kate was there in the open doorway before Becca could even get close enough to knock, welcoming her with literal open arms.

“Becks,” she said.

Becca dropped her bags and stepped into the hug. “Katie Cakes.”

All of her reservations washed away. All of those silly thoughts of jealousy over how Kate seemed to be able to sort out anything with ease. This was where she needed to be. This was who she needed to be with.

“Hi, Becca,” came another voice from inside the living room.

Wyatt. Wyatt, the pretty biker boy. Kate’s pretty biker boy. Previously, Becca had found him to be a little cocky and annoying and overly sure of himself, but right now, he didn’t seem so bad. He even looked like he might be wearing his nicest pair of jeans out of respect.

But he wasn’t alone in the living room.

“Hi, Becca,” another familiar voice said.

Oh, great, she thought. The Wookie is here.

The Wookie’s name was Griz. All six foot six or whatever ridiculous height he was, with a beard as giant as the rest of him, with that same expression on his face that he always had, like he was trying to think of something but he couldn’t quite get it.

He was nice enough, but she knew he had a crush on her and she couldn’t be less interested. Griz was not her type by a long shot. She was mint juleps and big floppy hats at the Kentucky Derby, he was cans of Schlitz beer at the local fire hall.

He kept trying and trying, but she knew it was best to keep a wall up between them. It wouldn’t do anyone any good to let him think he was getting somewhere. The last thing she wanted was to lead the poor guy on.

Still, she couldn’t be rude.

“Griz,” she said.

“I can help you with your bags,” Griz said.

“I’ve got them,” Becca said quickly, scooping up her bags and shuffling them inside before the giant man-ape could cross the room to grab them.

“How was the flight?” Kate asked.

“Pleh,” Becca said, and let that be her entire answer.

She tossed her bags into the guest bedroom and let them lie. She could unpack later. Now she just wanted to sit and melt into a chair that didn’t smell like airplane farts or old rental car.

“So what happened?” Kate asked.

Becca sighed and flopped into a nearby chair. She couldn’t put off telling her sister any longer.

“We were closing this deal,” she said. “It was a pretty big deal.”

“How big is a big deal?” Wyatt asked.

“Well, this one was like, around two hundred or so,” Becca said.
